Waltham, Mass. -- On the back of eight points (5G, 3A), junior
Jacqueline Jahelka tied a career-high and led the top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 13-6 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the #17 Bentley University Falcons on Saturday afternoon.
Jahelka's five goals were a team high for the Panthers (6-0, 4-0 NE-10) as
Rachel O'Brien (3G) and
Kate Beier (2G) combined for five tallies themselves. Also beating Bentley (2-5, 0-3 NE-10) keeper Lauren Ochs in the contest were
Jill Graziano,
Beth Ann Pierce and
Emily Keesling, who each scored one goal apiece. The two teams each scooped up 12 ground balls, but it was
Camille Rosellini who led the Adelphi effort with three, while
Jen Graham and Gianno Gallo each picked up a pair.
Ryley Weber and
Chelsea Abreu each won three draw controls for the Panthers, while Rosellini and Beier each won two en route to giving the Brown and Gold a 12-7 edge in that statistic.Â
With Adelphi already a man up, Keesling scored just 53 seconds into the game to give Adelphi the lead, but neither side would score for nearly 14 minutes until Pierce found the back of the net off a Jahelka feed to double the Panthers' edge to 2-0. The Falcons got on the board at the 11:23 mark in the opening half, as Kelsey Howard beat
Taylor Hayes for her first of two goals on the day to halve the lead, before Jahelka responded with her first tally of the day with 10:18 remaining.
With less than a minute remaining, the score read 3-1 in favor of the Panthers -- but in the final 39 seconds of the half, O'Brien scored twice before Graziano scored her first goal of the season off a pass from
Danielle Montano with just three ticks on the clock to make it a 6-1 game at halftime.
To open the second half, Jahelka scored twice more to push the Adelphi run to six unanswered goals, before Meredtih Hart and Ciara Morley responded just 27 seconds apart for the hosts to make it an 8-3 game. The Falcons never got closer than a five-goal margin from that point, as O'Brien, Jahelka and Beier all found the back of the Bentley net again to push the lead to a game-high eight with 18:37 left on the clock.Â
Over the final 17:55, Bentley scored three times while Adelphi scored twice, as Beier ended the scoring for both teams on another man-up opportunity when she took a pass from Abreu into the back of the net with 5:19 remaining for the 13-6 final. To keep Bentley off the board in the final minutes, Hayes made two of the six saves she recorded in the game.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 30th when they host the Owls of Southern Connecticut State in a 6 pm NE-10 contest.
NOTES- Jahelka and O'Brien's 38 points tie them for both the team and NE-10 lead.
- With her assist on the final goal of the game, Abreu recorded her first collegiate point.Â
