Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Le Moyne After Winning Opener

Garden City, N.Y. - Le Moyne claimed the nightcap of today's doubleheader 11-1 after the Adelphi University baseball team won the opener 3-1. In the process, the Dolphins (14-9/2-1 NE-10) claimed two out of three in the series that also included the opening week of Northeast-10 Conference action.

Brett Malm and Michael Cattani led the Panthers (10-10/1-2 NE-10) with three hits a piece on the day. Cattani added a run scored while Robert Vani scored twice and Alex Zykoff picked up the lone RBI of the day.

Game One
Adelphi claimed the early lead in the opener as Zykoff picked up his RBI in the second inning. Vani and Malm led the inning off with back-to-back singles followed by two outs. With the two outs on the board, Zykoff struck a first pitch single into left field to score Vani. However, in the next half inning, the Dolphins responded with a RBI sacrifice fly from Brett Charbonneau, tying the game at 1-1.

After four scoreless innings, the Brown and Gold put forth the winning runs during the eight inning. With Cattani and Vani on-base after a pair of singles earlier in the inning, Eric Hassell drove a ball deep to left field that was dropped to score the two runners and afford Adelphi a 3-1 advantage. Steve Kuhn earned his first save of the season in the ninth with a shutout inning.

Despite the no decision, TJ Santiago started the game with seven innings of work and striking out seven. Meanwhile, Michael Tarpey notched his first win of the year with a hitless eighth inning. Zach Place suffered the loss for the Dolphins after going eight innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out five.

Game Two
Two big innings in the finale helped propel Le Moyne to the 11-1 decision as four different individuals knocked in two runs including Gabe Levanti who matched Donato DiNorcia with three hits each. Sam Walsh moved to 4-0 on the hill by logging seven innings that included no earned runs and three strikeouts.

After the Panthers responded in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1 as Brandon Morse scored on a field error, Le Moyne tallied four runs in the sixth followed by six in the eighth to open up the advantage. Included among the 10 runs in the two inning were 10 hits for the Dolphins while the Brown and Gold committed two errors.

During the eighth inning, Nick Place and Josiah Gray each recorded two RBI hits. Cattani led the Panther effort in the game with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate while Malm and Jordan Milo posted hits.
