North Easton, Mass. - The top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team used defensive pressure to stifle the 15th-ranked Stonehill Skyhawks, forcing them into 19 turnovers and holding them to just three goals and five shots in a 13-3 victory tonight on the road.
The win runs Adelphi's current win streak to five games, putting their overall record at 5-0. They remain untarnished in the Northeast-10 at 3-0, while the Skyhawks slip to .500 both overall, 2-2 and in conference play, 1-1.
The defensive effort was led by
Kaitlyn Stackpole and
Jen Graham, who forced three and two turnovers respectively, while
Michele Scannell collected six draw controls and
Ryley Weber chipped in three. Stackpole also led all players in ground balls with a game-high five.
Adelphi's attacking trio of
Rachel O'Brien,
Jacqueline Jahelka and
Emily Keesling combined to score 8 of the Panthers' 13 goals and accounted for all seven of the team's assists. O'Brien led all players with six points on three goals and three assists, while Jahelka put a game-high four goals into the Stonehill net and added an assist. Keesling rounded out the trio's scoring with one goal and three assists.
Rachel Aitkens was the only other member of the Brown and Gold to reach double digits, tying her career-high with three goals.
The contest was a game of runs, with Adelphi taking their turn first. The Panthers scored the first five goals, putting a ripple in the back of the Skyhawk net just 1:47 into the action off the stick of O'Brien. The Panthers' fifth and final goal of the first half came 14:43 remaining in the first 30 minutes of play thanks to an individual effort from
Beth Ann Pierce.
Then Stonehill took their turn, breaking through the Brown and Gold defense with just under 11 minnutes to play on an Elizabeth Vetter goal. The hosts added one more tally before the half and continued their momentum after intermission, with their third and final goal of the evening coming just 1:17 into the second half. Stonehill's third goal of the game made it a two-goal contest at 5-3, with just over 28 minutes left in the conference clash.
However, the top-ranked Panthers answered the bell, scoring their sixth goal of the game less then a minute later when Keesling found Beier, who beat the Skyhawks' Kaitlyn Hess to double up Stonehill's score, 6-3. That tally kicked off an eight-goal Adelphi run which ended with back-to-back goals from Aitkens to shut the door on the hosts and secure a 13-3 win for the Panthers.
Adelphi returns to the field for another opening draw on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 am against Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
