Boca Raton, Fla. - A line out to second base and a tag of second from
Ray Triano ended a Southern Connecticut State threat in the ninth as the Adelphi University baseball team held on for a 6-5 victory earlier this afternoon at Lynn University. The victory marks the final game of the eight-game Florida trip for the Panthers (8-8).
With two runners on in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out,
Ed Baram forced a line out to Triano at second followed by the senior touching second base to get the runner and end the game.
The big inning for the Panthers came in the fourth, entering with a 5-2 deficit. With two runners on,
Zack Levinson notched a two RBI single to bring the Brown and Gold within 5-4. Later in the inning, back-to-back RBI singles from
Robert Vani and
Eric Hassell brought the advantage back to Adelphi.
From there, starting pitcher
TJ Santiago settled in to help keep the Owls' offense quiet. The junior finished with 6.1 innings of work and striking out nine for his third win of the season despite five runs in the second and third innings from Southern Connecticut.
Additionally,
Michael Demarest came out of the bullpen to toss 1.2 innings of relief work, striking out one without allowing a hit. Offensively, Morse, Levinson, and
Kory Cassara each tallied two hits while Stack scored two runs.
Adelphi originally jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Brandon Morse led off with a double. After a Stack walk and Vani ground out, Hassell drove in Morse with a grounder to third base.
Brett Malm picked up his team-leading 10th RBI by driving in Stack. However, a run in the second and four runs in the third gave the Owls a 5-2 advantage before the four-run inning for the Panthers in the fourth.
The Brown and Gold return home this Tuesday, hosting Philadelphia at 3:30 pm on William J. Bonomo Field.
Notes:- The Panthers move to 2-0 against the Owls prior to three conference games.
- Santiago finished one strikeout shy of tying his career-high of 10, set back in the 2014 season.
