Miami, Fla. – A run in the top of the ninth inning helped propel Saint Thomas Aquinas to a 2-1 victory against the Adelphi University baseball team earlier this evening. The game was played at Barry University in Miami, part of an eight-game trip for the Panthers (7-6).
With one out in the ninth inning, John DeAngelis lined a double to right field to give the Spartans (9-3) a base runner with the game tied at 1-1. Two batters later, after Michael Morgan reached on a hit-by-pitch, Joseph Pena singled to centerfield to plate DeAngelis for the winning run.
Zack Levinson managed to turn a double play to end the threat, however, the Brown and Gold were unable to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
St. Thomas Aquinas scored first, breaking a scoreless game during the top of the sixth inning as Nicholas Gargan picked up a RBI single to score Greg Dawbar. Adelphi quickly responded in the next half inning as
Eric Hassell scored on a
Brett Malm single. Hassell originally reached with a two-out single and followed up with a steal of second before Malm's single.
Seven scoreless innings resulted in the Spartans having the opportunity to score in the final inning for the victory. Reliever George Navadel picked up his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth that included one strikeout. Chris Pennell earned his second victory out the bullpen by tossing 1.1 innings of relief, forcing two fly outs and two groundouts.
Both starting pitchers kept their teams in contention, as each went at least six innings.
Ed Baram logged exactly six frames for the Panthers in the no decision with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, also in a no decision, John Bednarek scattered seven hits and struck out one in 6.2 innings.
Hassell and Malm led the effort from the plate for the Panthers with two hits each to make up four of the team's seven. The top three in the batting order for the Spartans – Joseph Pena, Dawber, and Gargan – all tallied two hits apiece.
After an off day on Wednesday, Adelphi begins a two-game series at Lynn University on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm in Boca Raton.
