Boca Raton, Fla. – A ninth inning rally fell short for the Adelphi University baseball team this afternoon as Southern New Hampshire came away with the 5-2 win. The game was played at Lynn University, part of the eight-game trip for the Panthers (7-5).
With one out in the ninth and trailing 5-0,
Eric Hassell reached base after being hit by a pitch followed by
Brett Malm doubling to left field.
Kory Cassara picked up a RBI, scoring Hassell on a ground out to the Penmen (13-0) shortstop.
Michael Stack scored Malm in the next at-bat with a single to right field. However, Jake Walkinshaw preserved the victory for Southern New Hampshire with his fourth save of the year with a fly out for the final out.
Stack and Malm each notched two hits on the day along with
Tyler Warshefskie to account for six of the seven team hits.
Matthew O'Connor pitched in relief for the second straight day, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts during the fifth and sixth innings.
The Penmen opened the scoring in the second inning with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. In the fourth inning, Mike Mastroberti increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI single. Southern New Hampshire added a run each in the seventh and the eighth, first on a throwing error followed by a Mastroberti earning another RBI behind a single to right field to push the lead to 5-0.
Looking ahead, the Brown and Gold play game five of the trip Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. The Panthers are scheduled to face Saint Thomas Aquinas at Barry University in Miami.
Notes:- Southern New Hampshire claimed eight of the nine first place votes to rank first in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll. The Panthers remained fifth on the list.
- Adelphi moves to 2-2 on the trip with four games remaining.
