West Palm Beach, Fla. - A masterful pitching performance while also matching a season-high in hits helped the Adelphi University baseball team upend Wilmington 3-0 earlier today at Rubin Park of the Palm Beach Atlantic University campus. In the process, the Panthers (7-3) claimed both games of a short two-game series against the Wildcats (2-9) after yesterday's 10-3 win.
Junior pitcher
TJ Santiago went the distance for his second win of the season today, tossing nine innings of shutout work that included seven strikeouts and no walks. Santiago needed just 93 pitches to complete the shutout.
From the plate,
Brandon Morse continued his hot streak by going 5-for-5 from the plate with a RBI. Meanwhile,
Robert Vani added three hits while
Kory Cassara and Eric Hassel each tallied two with Cassara adding a RBI. It is the second straight day the offense belted 14 hits, tying for the season-best thus far.
The Brown and Gold got on the board in the first frame of the game as Cassara drove in Vani with a RBI double. Vani singled in the previous at-bat on a full count pitch. During the fourth inning, Morse drove in
Michael Cattani with a double to the left field corner to increase the lead to 2-0. With
Michael Stack at the plate in the next at-bat, Hassell was able to come in on a passed ball to make it 3-0 Adelphi.
From there, Santiago was able to scatter three hits throughout the finals five innings against the Wildcats. The junior closed out the game by retiring the last eight batters, including a strike out to start the ninth.
Adelphi is back on the diamond tomorrow with an 11:00 am contest against Molloy. The game is scheduled to be played at Lynn University in Boca Raton.
Notes:- Santiago tossed the first complete game for the Panthers since Stephen Bove on May 10, 2014.
