Miami, Fla. – Eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning helped the Adelphi University baseball team upend Wilmington 10-3 earlier today at Saint Thomas University – Miami to begin an eight-game Florida road trip.
The Panthers (6-3) tallied nine hits towards the eight runs during the bottom of the sixth inning while also being benefitted by two errors from the Wildcats (2-8).
Michael Stack and
Robert Vani notched back-to-back singles to start the frame before Stack scored on a double steal and a throwing error. Vani followed up by touching home during a pinch-hit single from
Tyler Murphy to put Adelphi up 4-2.
After a single from
Brett Malm,
Zack Levinson reached on an error after laying down a sacrifice bunt that also scored Malm and Jonathon Iadevaia, who was pinch running for Murphy.
Kory Cassara,
John Fogarty,
Brandon Morse, and Vani all added RBI hits to cap off the eight-run inning.
Stack and Vani each finished with three hits while Stack scored twice and Vani drove in two runs. Morse, Malm, and Cassara all added two hits a piece with Morse joining Stack with two scored runs.
From the mound,
Jonathon Mulford earned his first victory of the season by tossing 6.2 innings and striking out five.
Steven Kuhn pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts while
Michael Ceparano and
Michael Demarest combined for 1.1 innings of shutout work.
The Brown and Gold started the game with three straight singles, including a RBI single from Vani to score first. Stack added the second run to help Adelphi start out with a 2-0 lead. Wilmington tied the score in one play during the fifth as two runs scored on a fielding error. The Wildcats cut into the deficit with one run in the seventh, however, the Panther bullpen closed out the victory.
Adelphi and Wilmington close out a quick two-game series with a 12:00 pm first pitch tomorrow in Palm Beach, Fla. The game is set to be played at Palm Beach Atlantic.
Notes:- Adelphi was ranked fifth in the East Region of the latest
NCBWA Poll.- The Panthers are hitting .313 this season while holding opponents to a .237 average.
