Baseball Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit In Doubleheader To Close Out Trip

Winter Haven, Fla. - Closing a quick five-game, three-day trip to Central Florida, the Adelphi University baseball team upended Wheeling Jesuit in both ends of today's doubleheader, 6-2 and 10-1, to end the quick trip 4-1.

Brandon Morse, Kory Cassara, and Brett Malm each notched three hits on the day while John Fogarty, Robert Vani, and Eric Hassell added two a piece. John Thompson and TJ Santiago each tossed six innings on the afternoon to earn the victories.

Game One
Adelphi (4-1) scored all six runs in the bottom of the third inning to jump out to an early 6-0 advantage. Five hits highlighted the innings including singles from Steven Withers, Morse, and Zack Levinson along with run scoring doubles by Malm and Cassara.

Wheeling Jesuit (0-5) rallied for a run in each the fifth and seventh, however, Santiago struck out seven through six innings of work to earn the victory. David Butler came in to get the final out of the game, forcing a line out after an error allowed a runner.

Morse led the offense with two hits while seven others picked up one hit. Michael Cattani also drew the lone walk of the game for the Panthers.

Game Two
Already with a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, the Brown and Gold scored eight runs in the final three innings of the seven-inning game to claim the 10-0 victory in the nightcap. The Panthers needed just five hits to score seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by two run scoring hits from Hassell.

On the mound, Thompson threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win. The junior allowed just three hits before Kieran McLaughlin entered to shutout the Cardinals in the ninth.

Up Next
The Panthers return to campus next weekend, hosting three games in two days. Adelphi welcomes Franklin Pierce on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon followed by 1:00 pm game against Southern Connecticut State on Sunday.

Notes
- Vani led the team with six hits this weekend while Morse and Cassara each notched five.
- The pitching staff has recorded a 2.70 ERA through five games.
