Garden City, N.Y. - Opening the home portion of the 2016 campaign, the Adelphi University baseball team dropped both ends of today's doubleheader versus Franklin Pierce, the third ranked team in the latest NCBWA National Poll. The Raven (7-0) opened with a 4-0 victory before taking a 3-2 decision.
Brett Malm led the effort for the Panthers (4-3) with five hits including a double.
Camden Orologio and
Brandon Morse each picked up three hits while Orologio added a homerun and two RBI. The Brown and Gold held a 17-11 advantage in hits on the afternoon.
Three individuals posted two hits for the Ravens as Chris LaVorgna, Jay Jabs, and Max DiTondo shared the team-high. Additionally, five individuals each tallied one RBI while DiTondo and Matt Burns scored two runs a piece.
Game OneFive shutout innings to start the opener was broken up in the top of the sixth as Franklin Pierce struck first. Included in the inning was the first hit for the Ravens as
Jonathon Mulford started out the game without allowing a hit through the first five frames.
Franklin Pierce scored four runs through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. In the sixth, Justin Brock led the inning off with a single before coming around to score three batters later on a Jabs single.
In the seventh, a RBI double from Christopher Stanford pushed the lead to 2-0 before the Ravens extended the lead to 4-0 in the next inning. John Friday nothced a pinch-hit RBI in the eighth prior to Burns making it 4-0 on a steal of home.
Despite the loss, Mulford pitched 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts and just two runs allowed.
Ed Baram pitched the ninth, allowing one hit and facing four batters. Malm went 3-for-4 from the plate while Vani and Morse were credited with two hits a piece.
Game TwoThe Panthers jumped out the early advantage in the nightcap during the bottom of the second inning when Orologio sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for the solo homerun.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Ravens scored three runs in the top of the fourth on three hits. With the bases loaded, LaVorgna tied the the game with a RBI single before Jabs scored on a fielder's choice to take a 2-1 lead. DiTondo scored a crucial third run during a run down play to afford the Ravens a 3-1 lead midway through the fourth.
Orologio cut into the Franklin Pierce run during the fifth inning with his second RBI of the game to score Malm on a single. However, Adelphi was unable to score during a base loaded opportunity later in the inning to end the fifth behind 3-2.
Jabs moved in from third base for the Ravens to the mound and pitched the final two innings without giving up a run, striking out one and forcing a pair of fly out and ground outs to pick up the save.
TJ Santiago pitched all seven innings for the Panthers, striking out six in the effort.
