Lakeland, Fla. - Two wins coming during the last at-bat have highlighted three games played to this point for the Adelphi University baseball team during the first Florida trip of the year.
Junior
Robert Vani has led the Brown and Gold (2-1) at the plate with four hits through that includes a double and a triple, collecting two RBI.
Michael Cattani,
Zack Levinson, and
Michael Stack have all tallied three hits a piece. Additionally, Stack has matched Vani's two RBI total.
Friday versus Point ParkTrailing 6-1 against Point Park Friday evening heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, a furious rally from the Panthers helped earn the first walk-off victory. Adelphi scored six runs in the final frame to clinch the season-opening 7-6 win. Batting for the second time in the inning, Vani drove in Stack with the game-winning run. The Brown and Gold notched six straight singles in the inning, capped off by Vani's game-winner.
Vani, Stack, and Levinson along with
Steven Withers each collected two hits in the opener as the team finished with 12 hits.
Michael Demarest and
Daniel Taggart came out of the bullpen to toss a combined three innings of shutout work, with Taggart earning the victory. The Adelphi pitching staff struck out 10 on the night.
Saturday - Game One versus West Virginia WesleyanAdelphi rallied from a 1-0 deficit to score three runs throughout the fourth and fifth innings and claim a 3-1 lead in the opening game against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Camden Orologio tied in the game in the fourth with a RBI single followed by Stack scoring on an error in the fifth to take the lead. Vani pushed the advantage to two runs with a RBI triple in the next at-bat.
The Bobcats tied the game in the fifth with a run and regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Back-to-back doubles with one out in the seventh tied the scored before a run on fielder's choice gave the Bobcats the advantage for good. West Virginia Wesleyan's bullpen logged three shutout innings with four strikeouts to hold off the Brown and Gold in the opener, earning a 4-3 victory.
Saturday - Game two versus West Virginia WesleyanDespite the nightcap being scheduled for only sevening innings, the two programs ended up playing nine innings. The Bobcats forced extra innings by tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh. The visitors on the scoreboard then gained the lead in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring single.
However, the Panthers looked for another dramatic win trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth.
Brandon Morse led the inning off with a walk followed by a pinch-hit single from
Eric Hassell. After a groundout pushed the two runners up a base, Stack drove in Morse on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. In the next at-bat, Cattani capped off a strong debut with the game-winning single to drive in Hassell.
Cattani went 3-for-4 from the plate that included the clinching RBI while five other individuals picked up a hit each. Meanwhile,
Michael Tarpey logged the first six innings on the mound, striking out six without allowing a run.
Up NextThe Panthers wrap up the quick five-game, three-day trip Sunday with a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 am.
Notes:- The pitching staff has struck out 29 batters in 26.0 innings throughout three games.
- Vani earned NE-10 Second Team All-Conference honors last season.
