Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Adelphi Athletics

#9 Men's Lacrosse Stops #7 LIU-Post, 15-9

Brookville, N.Y. - The ninth-ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team doubled up the LIU-Post Pioneers, 6-3 at the half on the way to a 15-9 victory on the road. Salvatore Tuttle led the offensive effort with a game-high six points, helping push the Brown and Gold to 2-1 overall on the season, while the Pioneers continue to search for their first win at 0-2.

Tuttle registered six points on five goals and an assist, while Gordon Purdie, Jr. found the back of the goal twice and handed out two assists for four points. Anthony DeLuca racked up a team-high three assists on the afternoon while Anthony Gomes and Chris Racalbuto scored twice each. The defensive effort was led by Joe Giardina who caused two turnovers and picked up five ground balls. John English was dominant at the face-off "X" for Adelphi, winning 19 of his 25 attempts and picking up 11 ground balls, while John McGrath made 14 stops between the pipes for the Panthers.

Adelphi took control of the contest early, scoring the first three goals of the game. The first tally came off the stick of Gomes while Tuttle scored on back-to-back efforts, putting LIU-Post in a three-goal hole with 7:17 left in the first quarter. The Pioneer offense responded by coming alive, scoring twice to cut the Adelphi margin to just one goal, 3-2, with 3:43 remaining in the first stanza. Purdie, Jr. put a ripple in the back of the hosts' net with just over a minute to go, but Matty Beccaris kept it a one goal game, 4-3, scoring just nine seconds after Purdie.

The second 15 minutes of action was more of a defensive struggle with just two tallies in the quarter, but ortunately for the Panthers, both goals came off Brown and Gold sticks. Cory Stavis scored his sixth goal of the season with 5:19 on the clock and Racalbuto found the net for the first time in the game with just 1:08 left in the half, making it a 6-3 Panther lead halfway through the action.

The hosts opened the scoring in the third quarter but Adelphi had a quick answer, scoring three times in a span of just three minutes, while the final goal courtesy of Purdie, Jr., made it a 9-4 Brown and Gold lead. The Pioneers and Panthers ended the third quarter by trading goals, sending it into the final quarter with Adelphi in front, 10-5.

The final stanza was a back and forth affair with Adelphi coming out on top. It started with the Panthers scoring two of the first three goals, pushing their lead to six, 12-6 on Tom Nuckel's third goal of the season. However, the hosts had one more run in them, finding the back of the Brown and Gold net three times, unanswered to get within just three tallies, 12-9, with 3:31 left. From that point, the Adelphi senior class was up to the challenge, scoring three times in the final 21 seconds, to slam the door on LIU-Post and securing a 15-9 victory on the back of one goal from Gomes, Tuttle, and Stavis.

The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they travel up to Springfield, Mass. for a 1:00 pm Northeast-10 Conference clash with the Yellow Jackets of AIC.

NOTES
- With 12 goals thus far this season, Tuttle now has 148 career goals -- just one back of Wes Green's (2003-06) all-time Division II program mark of 149.
