Lakeland, Fla. - A career-high in points for
Salvatore Tuttle helped secure a 15-8 victory for the Adelphi University men's lacrosse this evening at Florida Southern. The Panthers entered the game ranked ninth in the latest
USILA Division II National Poll.
The senior Tuttle registered nine points on the night behind four goals and five assists to achieve a new career-high in addition to tying his career-best in assists.
Cory Stavis and
Gordon Purdie, Jr. added three goals apiece to the attack with Purdie, Jr. adding an assist. In the faceoff circle,
John English went 14-for-20 for the Panthers (1-10) as part of a 17-for-27 showing as a team.
Defensively,
Bryan Moritt was credited with five of the 12 caused turnovers to go along with four groundballs. English led the team with seven groundballs while
Joe Giardina added four and a caused turnover.
John McGrath earned the victory with eight saves, playing in the first three periods.
Cody Dyer led the Mocs (2-1) with three goals on 13 shots while coming up with four groundballs. Tyler Novak shared the game-high of seven groundballs with English along with goalkeeper Matt Lalli. Lalli also made 15 saves in 59 minutes of action.
Stavis and Purdie, Jr. scored the final two goals of the first period to help Adelphi end the quarter with a slight 3-2 advantage. From there, the Panthers scored four unanswered in the second period to take a 7-2 lead at halftime. Tuttle, Stavis, and Purdie, Jr. along with
Tom Nuckel each netted a goal throughout the 15 minutes.
After the first 30 minutes, in addition to the lead on the scoreboard, the Brown and Gold held a 23-19 advantage in shots that also included a 16-7 margin in shots on goal.
Back-to-back goals from Florida Southern, each from Kyle Silverstein, opened up the second half and cute the Adelphi lead to 7-4. However, another run by the Panthers opened up a 14-4 lead at the end of three periods. During the 7-0 run, Tuttle scored three times and also assisted on three goals. The lone scoring play the senior was not a part of was unassisted strike from Stavis to begin the run.
The Mocs outscored Adelphi 4-1 in the final period, including two extra-man tallies. However, the second and third periods proved to be enough for the Brown and Gold in the 15-8 win.
The Panthers return to New York this week to face cross-town rival LIU Post in a non-conference matchup Saturday in Brookville. The start is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
Notes: - Tuttle's former career-high in points was eight, a mark he met four times.
