New Haven, Conn. -- Despite holding a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team saw the New Haven Chargers come storming back to take the lead at the end of the second and never managed to take back the lead en route to falling 59-47 inside Charger Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (17-9, 10-8 NE-10) had their four-game winning streak snapped with the setback, as they struggled shooting from the floor (15-73) in the game and lost the battle on the glass, getting out-rebounded by a 62-42 margin.
Sierra Clark had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the effort, while Briana Bradford and Lauren Hebert combined for 43 of New Haven's (12-11, 8-9 NE-10) points.
Adelphi pushed out to a 9-4 lead, a run that finished with a three from
Ashley Gomez, to open the first frame en route to taking the early advantage over the first 10 minutes. After New Haven tied the score at 15-15 early in the second, the Panthers responded with five straight points, as
Lauren Nuss knocked down a three-pointer with 7:48 remaining to make the score 20-15. From that point, it was all New Haven as the Blue and Gold outscored the Panthers by a 17-6 margin in the remainder of the quarter, finishing off a 21-11 period that gave the Chargers a 32-26 lead at the break.
Adelphi's offense scuffled in the second half, as the Panthers went just 5-33 from the floor over the third and fourth quarters. Adelphi managed to keep things close for much of the third, but a 12-3 run over the final 5:52 -- after
Julia Gnieser scored the Panthers' last field goal of the quarter -- opened up New Haven's lead to 15, 48-33. That double-figure lead stayed in tact for the fourth, as the Panthers were held without a field goal for over six minute until
Tara Flynn sank the last triple of the contest with just 13 seconds on the clock.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 17th when they travel to Syracuse for a critical NE-10 meeting with Le Moyne at 5:30 pm.
