Syracuse, N.Y. -- After rallying from a seven-point deficit to tie the game up with seven seconds remaining, a late foul proved to be the undoing for the Adelphi University women's basketball team and gave the Le Moyne Dolphins a 56-55 victory at Ted Grant Court on Wednesday evening. Earlier today, the Panthers were slotted eighth in the first release of the
NCAA East Regional Rankings.
Ashley Gomez and
Sierra Clark tied for a team-high with 14 points apiece for the Panthers (17-10, 10-9 NE-10) while also combining for 13 rebounds.
Lauren Nuss and
Samantha Brenner each scored nine points for the Brown and Gold, who were beaten on the glass by the Dolphins (13-11, 10-8 NE-10) by a 40-29 margin. Maggie Brown scored a game-high 18 points for Le Moyne, while Andrade added 15.
Adelphi spent much of the opening quarter trailing after falling behind 5-0 in the early going, rallying to tie the score twice but never taking the lead. Down by four at 13-9 with 54 second remaining, Nuss scored the final five points of the frame to put Adelphi ahead for the first time at 14-13. Neither team could assert its authority in the second quarter, as the lead changed hands seven times over the course of the period. A Clark jumper put Adelphi up three at the 1:31 mark, but Le Moyne scored the final four points of the half to lead 29-28 at the break.
A low-scoring third period saw the two teams score just 16 points combined, and Adelphi went cold from the floor for nearly seven minutes of action until Brenner put in the final bucket of the quarter with six seconds remaining to push her team within three at 38-35.
Down seven with 1:45 to go, Gomez scored all seven of Adelphi's points in a 7-1 scoring run that brought them to within one. After the Dolphins' Maggie Brown sank one of two from the line with 14 seconds remaining, the Panthers advanced the ball and Sierra Clark took a pass from Gomez under the basket and scored to tie the game at 55-55. However, less than a second later, Tara Flynn fouled Vandell Andrade who proceeded to sink one of two from the line to give the home team the lead back. With the Panthers pressing up the court, Calli Balfour pulled up for the game-winning three-pointer that rimmed in and out to end the game.
Adelphi returns to action for its regular season finale on Tuesday, February 23 when they host the Southwest Division-leading Yellow Jackets of AIC at 5:30 pm. The Panthers will honor Brenner, Flynn, Nuss and Gomez prior to the game on Senior Night. NOTES- With the loss, Adelphi drops to third place in the Southwest Division, 0.5 games behind the Dolphins.
- The Panthers will get their bye week on Saturday before closing out the regular season against AIC on Tuesday.
