Jacobs Wins 100th as Women's Basketball Takes Down Saint Rose, 72-62

Garden City, N.Y. -- In a game where the Panthers led nearly wire-to-wire, Head Coach Heather Jacobs claimed her 100th career win at the helm of the Adelphi University women's basketball team behind a 72-62 win over the College of Saint Rose.

Calli Balfour led a trio of Panthers (17-8, 10-7 NE-10) in double figures on the night with 19 points while also recording five steals. Joining Balfour were Ashley Gomez, who recorded 16 points and dished out five assists, while Sierra Clark added 10 points and fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine. Adelphi had an advantage in depth on the night, as its bench out-scored the Golden Knights' by a 20-3 margin. Karissa Birthwright led the Golden Knights (14-10, 8-9 NE-10) with 16 points, while Staci Barrett tallied 14 to go along with a team-high 14 rebounds.

Adelphi jumped out to a 16-6 lead over the first six minutes of the opening quarter, before Saint Rose scored seven unanswered points to make it a one-possession game at 16-13. However, Adelphi's bench got going early as Julia Gnieser knocked down a three-pointer to cap the first at 19-13 in favor of Adelphi. The Brown and Gold's lead expanded to a game-high 12 as Balfour and Clark scored the first six points of the second period, but the visitors put together a 14-6 run to trail by four, 31-27, at halftime.

The two teams exchanged buckets for much of the third quarter, with the Panthers holding the Golden Knights at a three-point deficit for much of it. In the final three minutes of the period, however, the Panthers used a 6-2 scoring run to take a seven-point, 50-43 lead and hang on to the momentum that remained theirs for the fourth.

An 8-2 stretch to start the fourth, which saw Samantha Brenner score five points and Gnieser knock down another trey, pushed Adelphi's advantage back to double figures, 58-45, with 7:16 remaining. The home squad's lead stood in double digits for almost the duration, before Saint Rose pulled to within nine on a Britani Stowe three-pointer with 1:28 to go. However, the Golden Knights would get no closer and the Brown and Gold came away with their fourth straight victory.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 13th when they travel to the University of New Haven for a 3:30 pm NE-10 contest.

NOTES
