Manny Suarez and
Anthony Libroia combined for 42 points to help the Adelphi University men's basketball team to a 74-69 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Rose earlier this evening.
Suarez registered 24 points and fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine points to along with three steals and two blocks. Meanwhile, Libroia added 18 points, five assists, and five rebounds. The Panthers (18-7/10-7 NE-10) also provided a 42-28 points in the paint advantage.
Tyler Sayre led all scorers with 33 points for the Golden Knights (10-13/8-9 NE-10) that included 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Mical-Ryan Boyd tallied 16 points to combine with Sayre to score 49 of the team's 69 points.
Saint Rose built an early 11-point lead in the first half less than seven minutes into the half after Boyd knocked down a 3-pointer. However, the Panthers closed out the half with a 24-8 run to take a 32-26 lead at the half. Adelphi scored 24 of its paint in the point while shooting 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the field.
Libroia was able to get to the bucket to post a half-high of 12 points while Suarez netted 11 points. Syare and Boyd combined for 17 points to lead Saint Rose.
After Saint Rose cut the Adelphi lead to three points in the beginning of the second half, the Panthers used an 11-2 run to bring the advantage to 12 points at 48-36 with a pair of free throws from Libroia.
Adelphi continued to hold the lead for the remained of regulation, however, Saint Rose had an opportunity to tie the game in the final stages. A Max Weaver steals on an inbounds play set up Sayre with a 3-pointer on the right arc. The attempt fell just short for Sayre and
Conor McGuinness put the final margin at 74-69 with two free throws.
Sayre nearly brought the Golden Knights back with 24 points in the final half to lead all individuals. Suarez paced the Panthers with 13 points and six rebounds.
Adelphi returns to the court on Saturday with a trip to West Haven, Conn. to face the Chargers of New Haven. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 pm tip to lead off the NE-10 doubleheader.
Notes:- Adelphi takes a hold on second place in the Southwest Division of the conference with a 10-7 record.
- Suarez registered four dunks on the evening, two on the fastbreak and two in the halfcourt.
