Coffey Joins 1,000 Point Club in Men's Basketball's 101-82 Win Over NYIT

Garden City, N.Y. -- Behind 21 points, Michael Coffey became the 35th member of the Adelphi University men's basketball team's 1,000-point club on Friday afternoon, as the Panthers defeated Long Island rival NYIT in non-league action, 101-82.

Coffey, one of six Panthers (10-3) in double figures in the win, was joined at 20-plus by Jack Laffey who scored a game-high 27 points on 11-17 shooting from the field. Chris Millender tallied a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Conor McGuinness also had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 helpers. Round out Adelphi's offense were a pair of players with 13 points, as Manny Suarez tallied the figure in the starting lineup while Austin Beech chipped in the effort off the bench. NYIT (3-8) got double-doubles from Jon Feiler with 21 points and a game-high 21 rebounds, while Jeffrey Hayden chipped 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Adelphi led for all but 1:15 of the contest, as the two sides battled back and forth in the early going. The Bears' first and last lead came in the opening half at 16-14, before the Panthers exploded for 15 of the next 18 points over the next 3:15 to take a 10-point lead, 29-19, as Coffey swished for three. A 5-0 run for the Bears back the other way made it a one possession contest, and NYIT trailed by one on three more occasions looking to tie. However, Adelphi closed the half on an 11-4 run over the final 3:26 to take a 46-38 lead into the locker room.

The Brown and Gold's lead blossomed to double figures to begin the second half, but the Bears edged to within six thanks to a 5-0 spurt to bring the score to 61-55 with 13:54 to go. Hot shooting from behind the arc by Laffey and McGuinness kept the visitors at bay, while Millender also had a hand in Adelphi's late scoring over that time. Over the final six minutes, Adelphi pushed late, recording a game-ending 13-7 run to put them over the century mark and earn the win.

The Panthers return to action in the New Year, as they travel to Roberts Wesleyan College for a 2 pm non-league tilt on Monday, Jan 2.

- Coffey follows former teammate Anthony Libroia ('16) in the 1,000-point club, who reached the milestone last season.
