Syracuse, N.Y. -- A clutch three-pointer from
Julia Gnieser with 1:30 on the clock proved to be the decisive shot for the Adelphi University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers downed their Northeast-10 Conference rivals Le Moyne by a 62-48 decision.
With the scoreboard reading 51-48 in favor of the Panthers and the Dolphins in the midst of a run that shrank the Brown and Gold's lead late in the fourth quarter, the junior delivered the dagger late in the Panthers' possession after a
Calli Balfour steal put them back on offense and kicked off an 11-0 scoring run that iced the contest. The bulk of the scoring for the Panthers (6-2, 4-0 NE-10) in the victory was taken care of by
Sierra Clark and Balfour, as the two combined for 42 points and 22 rebounds.
Clark, with a second straight game of 23 points, also set a new career-high mark in rebounds with 16, and knocked down three three-pointers for the first time in her career.
Simone Hobdy also recorded a double-double, as she scored six of her 10 points in the final minute of the game and also pulled down 12 boards. Le Moyne (6-2, 3-1 NE-10), who went into the day as one of three teams unbeaten in conference play alongside the Panthers, got 10 points each from McKayla Roberts and Nicole Riddick.
Adelphi started the game on a 7-0 run, as Clark and Balfour accounted for all the scoring, before the Dolphins got their first bucket of the contest. At the end of the first 10 minutes, the score read 11-9 in favor of the Brown and Gold, as Clark put the team on her back early with a game-high eight points. The Panther pressure continued to start the second after Le Moyne tied the game at 11 apiece, as Gnieser hit her first three and
Natalie Fekula sprinted down court for the fastbreak layup off the Hobdy assist for a 16-11 lead with 7:19 to play. Over the next six minutes, a 12-6 scoring run in favor of the Panthers saw them take their largest lead of the game at 28-17, but the Dolphins went into the locker room with some momentum as Tine Randrup-Thomsen knocked down a three as time expired to put the deficit at single digits.
Ailaiya Demand scored six of the first eight points of the third quarter for the Dolphins, cutting the Adelphi lead to four at 30-26, and the Panther lead became a single possession at the 3:05 mark when Roberts hit a triple to make it 35-33. Undaunted again, however, Balfour and Clark accounted for all the scoring in an 8-4 quarter-ending run, which extended to 11-4 when Clark hit another from deep to start the fourth, to make it a 46-37 game. Nonetheless, the Dolphins had one last push in them in the fourth, as Roberts and Riddick combined for 11 points, five of which came from Riddick on back-to-back possessions, to make it a 51-48 game with 2:43 remaining. Le Moyne held possession and took a timeout at the 2:11 mark, looking to creep even closer or tie the score, but Balfour swiped the ball away from Demand to set the stage for both Gnieser and Adelphi's game-winning run.
The Panthers are back in action at home on Tuesday, Dec. 6, as they welcome the College of Saint Rose to the Center for Recreation and Sports at 5:30 pm.
NOTES
- Clark's previous career-high in rebounds was 12, which she accomplished multiple times in her Adelphi career.
- Gnieser's six points off the bench is a season-high.
