Men's Basketball Late Charge Falls Short at Le Moyne, 70-64

Adelphi took a one point lead with 1:51 to play in the contest, but could not hold on.

Syracuse, N.Y. - With less then two minutes left in the contest Manny Suarez put the Adelphi University men's basketball team up by two on the road in Syracuse, New York against Northeast-10 (NE10) opponent Le Moyne College (4-3, 1-2 NE10) this afternoon, December 3, but the Dolphins answered with a three-pointer and pulled away late, dispatching Adelphi, 70-64.

Jack Laffey and Michael Coffey carried the Adelphi (6-3, 2-2 NE10) offense, as both players reached double figures. Laffey scored a game-high 26 on a very efficient 9-12 from the field, including 7-10 from beyond the arc and Coffey chipped in 14, including four triples. Chris Millender did his work in the post, scoring nine points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds, while Conor McGuinness was credited with a team-high six assists.

The first half was peppered with five lead changes, and the first 10 minutes were primarily controlled by the Panthers. Adelphi reclaimed the lead from the Dolphins on an old fashioned three point play with 13:30 to play in the first, marking the fourth swap of the lead, 14-13. Just 65 ticks later a Laffey effort from beyond the arc pushed the Brown and Gold advantage to four points, 19-15 and the Panthers continued to cling to the lead as the first stanza crossed the halfway mark, 21-19 (9:58).

Unfortunately, Adelphi hit a three minute dry spell, while Le Moyne managed six points, building a four point edge, 25-21 with 7:07 remaining in the first session. Another Laffey triple chipped the Dolphin margin to just one, 25-24 with 6:52 to play, but the hosts closed out the half on a 12-6 run, including a three pointer with 58 ticks on the clock to take their largest lead of the half, 37-30, which remained the count as the buzzer sounded for halftime.

The Brown and Gold opened the second frame hot, as two Laffey three-pointers were sandwiched between Millender free throws, putting Adelphi back on top, 38-37, three and a half minutes into the action. The Dolphins countered with a, 11-3 run to retake the lead and reclaim their margin of seven points, 48-41 with 13:10 on the clock.

Laffey came through for Adelphi again with 9:42 left in the game, using another three-pointer to knot the score at 50, but again Le Moyne answered, this time creating a six point cushion two minutes later with a 6-2 spurt that was capped by a Isaiah Eisendorf jumper, 58-52.

Adelphi continued to show great effort, and it finally paid dividends when a Millender lay-in at the 3:45 mark put the Panthers on top for the first time since mid-way through the first half, 62-61. The hosts took the lead back less then a minute later, but Suarez answered the bell for the Brown and Gold with another lay-up, putting Adelphi in front, 64-63 with 1:51 to play.

On the very next possession the Dolphins gave a resounding response, getting a three pointer from Tanner Hyland to jump over Adelphi again, 66-64 with 85 seconds left in the game. Down the stretch Le Moyne was four of four to the charity stripe and Adelphi missed two three pointers, a lay-up and a free throw down the stretch, giving the Dolphins a 70-64 win.
