Garden City, N.Y. -- A career-high 22 points from
Austin Beech in 33 minutes off the bench helped the Adelphi University men's basketball team snap a two-game skid and rally to an 83-70 comeback win over the visiting College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night.
Beech, who shot a perfect 7-7 from the field and 8-8 from the charity stripe, scored 14 of his points in the second half to help the Panthers (7-3, 3-2 NE10) turn around a five-point deficit in the late stages. The freshman also dished out six assists and pulled down six rebounds, leading a quartet of Panthers in double figures.
Jack Laffey (16 points),
Michael Coffey (15 points) and
Manny Suarez all joined Beech in the offensive effort, while Chris Millander's 12 first-half rebounds helped Adelphi build an eight-point lead at halftime. Four of Saint Rose's (9-2, 4-2 NE10) five starters scored in double figures in the setback.
The Brown and Gold began the first half on a 16-8 run, which the Golden Knights cut to a single point after a 7-0 run of their own that was capped by a Jack Jones three-pointer. Laffey responded with a triple of his own at the 11:49 mark, but hot shooting from Saint Rose extended the run to 15-3 to put the visitors on top, 23-19 with 9:55 remaining. Undaunted, Adelphi responded with the next eight points, as Millender scored his six for the game, to get back on top, and the home team closed out the half on a 10-6 run following the final media timeout.
The visiting Golden Knights started the second half on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 43-43, and the run expanded to 18-9 to put their lead at 51-50 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. On two occassions, triples off the hand of Jones made it a two-possession game in favor of the visitors -- once to make it 58-52 win 9:28 remaining and again at 61-57 with 7:08 to play -- but a Coffey three-pointer kickstarted the Adelphi comeback on the ensuing possession. From there, Adelphi scored nine of the next 13 points to lead 69-65 as Beech converted on the old-fashioned three-point play with 3:06 to play. A 14-5 run over the final 2:31 iced the game for the Brown and Gold, as the squad made nine of 10 shots from the charity stripe down the stretch.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they travel to Pace University for a 3:30 pm NE10 contest.
