Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Adelphi Athletics

Late Heroics Lead Women's Hoops to Sixth Straight Win, 75-69 Over Bridgeport in Overtime

Garden City, N.Y. – With the Adelphi University women's basketball team trailing by two with under a minute to play in overtime, Sierra Clark sunk a three-pointer from straightaway beyond the arc to give the Panthers the lead for good in what became their sixth straight win, 75-69, over the University of Bridgeport at home on Thursday night.

A trio of scorers in double-figures paced Adelphi (10-2) to its sixth-straight win, as Calli Balfour scored a team-high 29 for her fourth game of 20-plus points this season, and a double-double behind 12 rebounds. Clark ended her night with 20 points total, as seven came in the overtime period to go along with 11 rebounds and four blocks, three of which she recorded in extra time. Niajah Morgan was the final Panther in double-figures with 11 points, while Simone Hobdy also pulled 10 misses, giving Adelphi a 55-42 edge in rebounding while turning 28 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points. Camera Miley scored a game-high 30 points for Bridgeport (8-6), including a near-perfect 13-14 from the charity stripe.

The visiting Purple Knights started hot, sprinting out to an 11-3 lead to begin the game in what read as a 17-12 edge at the end of the opening quarter. However, the Brown and Gold defense stepped up in the second period, holding the visitors to just six points and embarking on a 7-0 mid-period run that saw the Panthers take the lead for the first time in the game. With the score even at 25-25, Balfour swished for two with just over a minute to play to put the Panthers in the locker room up two, 27-25.

A tight third period saw multiple ties and lead changes between the two sides, as a Fallyn Stephens three-pointer put Adelphi back ahead late in the frame, 38-37. However, the Purple Knights hit back to score six of the final eight points of the period to lead by three, 43-30 headed to the final quarter of regulation.

The Brown and Gold wrestled the lead back in the fourth, as Balfour connected for a pair of buckets on a five-point swing that put the Panthers ahead by four after trailing by one at 53-49 with less than five minutes to play. With Adelphi leading by five with just over a minute on the clock, Aurelie Leblanc-Florent sunk a three to make it a one possession game, but the game was tied from the charity stripe as the Panthers shot 2-of-4 from the line from that point as Miley sank all four of her chances to tie the game at 60-60 at the end of regulation.

In the extra period, Bridgeport took a three-point lead at 64-61 with 3:53 to play, before Morgan drove to the hoop for two plus the foul to tie the game at 64-64. However, Miley continued to pace the visitors with another two points, setting the stage for Clark to sink the game-winner on the next trip down the floor. From there, the game was won at the charity stripe, as the Panthers went a perfect 8-for-8 to seal the win.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, Dec. 30 when they close out the 2016 calendar year with a non-conference game at Dominican College at 2 pm.

NOTES
- Clark recorded her sixth straight double-double, and 10th of the season.
- Four blocks ties a career-high for the senior forward as well.
