Offensive Outburst Pushes Men's Basketball Past Nyack, 99-66

Nyack, N.Y. -  The Adelphi University men's basketball team blitzed Nyack College for 32 points in the final 10 minutes to turn a 12-point lead, 67-55, into a 33-point non-conference road victory, 99-66.

Jack Laffey led the Panthers (9-3) with 31 points, including five three pointers, while Manny Suarez chipped in 19 and a game-high 16 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Michael Coffey also put 19 points on the scoreboard, including 16 in the first half, while Conor McGuinness handed out a career-best 15 assists.

Adelphi opened the contest with a 13-2 burst over the first five minutes of play, including eight points from Coffey. Nyack (3-7) scored 12 of the next 14 points to pull within one, 15-14 with 12:12 left in the first half, but back-to-back three pointers from Austin Beech and Coffey, quickly pushed the Panther advantage to seven points, 21-14.

With 7:55 remaining in the opening frame, Beech converted two free throws to give the Brown and Gold its only double-digit lead of the half, 31-21, but the hosts managed to cut the margin to just one point again, 35-34 with 4:17 on the clock. However, a Laffey jumper sparked a period-ending 9-2 run, sending the game into the break with Adelphi on top, 44-36.

The second half started off at a sluggish pace, with Adelphi and Nyack combining for just 12 points in the first 4:14, but a Suarez dunk kicked off a stretch that saw the Panthers and hosts trade buckets over the next five minutes, keeping the lead steady at 12, 67-55 halfway through the second half.

From there, a Laffey jumper kicked off a stretch that lasted the rest of the game, ballooning the Panther margin to a game-high, 35 points, 99-64 on a Kevin Martins triple with just 93 seconds left.  Nyack would hold Adelphi scoreless in the final seconds, and added two free throws, making the Panthers' winning margin, 99-66.

Adelphi will take a break from game action for just over two weeks, returning to the court on Friday, Dec. 30 when they welcome NYIT to Garden City for a 2:00 pm tip-off in the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Notes:
- This is Adelphi's second 30+ point victory this season. The Panthers dispatched Salem International, 104-64 on November 29.
- Conor McGuinness (103) is just 48 assists shy of the 10th spot on Adelphi's single season list, just 12 games into the season, while Michael Coffey (47) and Jack Laffey (45) are just 19 and 21 three-pointers short of the 10th spot on the Panthers single season three-pointers made list.
