NE-10 CHAMPIONS: Men's Soccer Upends Le Moyne 2-1 For Championship Title

Garden City, N.Y. - Overcoming a 1-0 deficit, the Adelphi University men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to capture it's first Northeast-10 Conference Championship title with a 2-1 victory against Le Moyne this afternoon on Motamed Field.

Nearly 10 minutes after Le Moyne grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 47th minute, the Brown and Gold (17-1-1) answered during the 57th minute with Joseph Sanchez scoring his first of the day. James Thristino played a ball forward to the right side of the end line that was touched in by Federico De Oliveira, setting up Sanchez for the one-time goal and tying the score at 1-1.

With 64 minutes expired, Sanchez once again found himself in line to add another tally. Thristino lofted a ball ahead, again on the right end line, that Sanchez fired in on a tough angle to beat Ben Beaury and put Adelphi ahead 2-1 with 25 minutes remaining.

In the final 25 minutes, Spenser Powell made four of his five saves to keep the Dolphins (14-4-2) off the scoreboard as the Panthers attempted just one shot, from Thristino, during that time. With the Le Moyne pressure, the visitors claimed an 8-6 shot margin in the final period.

Le Moyne jumped out to advantage to open the second half following a scoreless first half as Pablo Fernandez finished a through ball from Marcello Palucci. However, the two answers from Sanchez helped capture the NE-10 Title for the Panthers.

Adelphi earned a slight 14-13 shot advantage in the full 90 minutes while also holding a 5-3 corner kick margin. Powell finished his day with five saves while Beaury stopped four shots in the effort.

"I am so proud of the boys and my coaching staff for all the work they have put in to this point," said Head Coach Carlo Acquista. "The NE-10 is arguably one of the toughest conferences in the country. Credit to Le Moyne; they are extremely well coached and are always up for a battle."

Following the match, Sanchez was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship. Joining him on the All-Championship Team were teammates Emil Thomsen and Thristino. Also earning All-Championship honors were Ryan Matthews and Callum Donnelly of Le Moyne along with Liam Watt of Franklin Pierce and Oscar Zepada Cagide of Merrimack.

Acquista added, "this has been one of our major goals from the start of the season. We will enjoy it for the day and quickly move on and prepare for the NCAA Tournament."

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will announce the upcoming NCAA Tournament field on Monday at 6:30 pm live on NCAA.com, following the announcement of the NCAA women's soccer Tournament field.

Notes:
- The Panthers win the NE-10 Championship Title in just the fourth year since joining the conference.
- The Brown and Gold are one shutout away from setting the program record with 13 clean sheets in a season.
