Garden City, N.Y. - A goal in the 63rd minute proved to be the decisive tally as the Adelphi University men's soccer team advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament behind a 1-0 victory against Southern New Hampshire in the Second Round this evening on Motamed Field.
With the victory, Adelphi (18-1-1) advances to the Third Round to face LIU Post, who earned a berth to the Third Round behind a 1-0 win against Merrimack earlier today.
Following 62 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Panthers were awarded a free kick in Penmen (12-5-2) territory nearly 18 minutes into the second half. With the spot about eight yards outside the 18-yard box,
Joseph Sanchez sent in an attempt that Nick Zucco tipped off the cross bar and to the feet of
Federico De Oliveira. The NE-10 Player of the Year followed with a shot from the left post to the right side of the net to give the Panthers the advantage.
With the 1-0 advantage,
Spenser Powell made three of his five saves on the evening in the final 27 minutes to preserve the team's 13th shutout of the season, a new program record. Additioanlly, the 18 wins on the season increases a school record. The victory also marks the first win in NCAA Division II Tournament play since 1975, when the Panthers upended Wisconsin Greeny Bay 9-1 in the Third Place game.
Powell ended his evening with five saves and increased his save percentage to .871 on the season while Zucco also made five stops for the visitors. The Penmen also controlled the offensive categories in the effort, outshooting Adelphi 16-11 and producing five corner kicks compared to zero.
The NCAA Third Round matchup, also the East Region Championship, is scheduled for Thursday at LIU Post. A game time is to be determined in the next few days. The winner of the East Region Championship will face the winner of the Atlantic Region Championship next Saturday with a trip to the National Semifinal Round on the line.

- The Pioneers upended Adelphi 2-1 to open the season with two goals late in regulation.
- Sanchez move in to a tie with
James Thristino for the team-high in assists at nine.
