Women's Basketball Edges Molloy Down the Stretch, 66-61

Garden City, N.Y. -- The combined efforts of Simone Hobdy and Sierra Clark helped pace the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a non-league win over the visiting Molloy College Lions on Wednesday night, 66-61, inside the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Hobdy scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half, while Clark went off for 17 in the second half as part of her 23-point total to combine as Adelphi's (5-2) two leading scorers. Clark also pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, to go along with four blocks. Rounding out a trio of Panthers in double figures was 12 points from Sierra Schrader, who tied Hobdy with nine rebounds. Symone Kelly scored a team-high 14 points for Molloy (6-2).

A Schrader three at the 7:13 mark in the first quarter put Adelphi on top 7-4, and kicked off a run of four three-pointers for either side that saw the score tied at 10-10 with 4:11 left in the period. From there, however, the Brown and Gold offense exploded for an 11-0 run that lasted almost the duration of the period, which saw Hobdy score seven of those points, gave the home team command at 21-10 before Ihnacinse Grady knocked down a three for the final bucket of the quarter.

A tight second quarter saw the Lions cut the lead to five with 3:34 remaining until halftime, but Hobdy, Fallyn Stephens and Niajah Morgan connected from beyond the arc to hold off the visitors' pressure enough to enter the locker room with a nine-point edge, 37-28.

While the third quarter proved to also be a back-and-forth affair in which Adelphi held off the visitors' momentum, the Lions made their biggest push in the fourth quarter thanks to a 10-4 scoring run that made it a four-point game, 61-57 with 2:40 to play. On the next Lion possession, Morgan stole the ball away and Clark dished off to Calli Balfour under the basket who scored for two to make it a six-point ballgame. Another late push saw Molloy cut the lead to four with 11 ticks on the clock, but the comeback ran out of time and the Panthers came away with the win.

The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, as they travel to Le Moyne College for a 12 pm contest.

NOTES
- Clark currently ranks fourth in the NE-10 in scoring, while both she and Schrader check in the top 10 in rebounding.
