Mansfield, Mass. - With the Northeast-10 Conference Office announcing men's soccer All-Conference selections today, Adelphi University was honored with three major awards as
Federico De Oliveira was named Player of the Year while
Carlo Acquista was tabbed Coach of the Year and
Alejandro Penzini garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors.
As a midfielder, De Oliveira has helped the Panthers reach new levels this year beyond the stat sheet. With the Brown and Gold earning the NE-10 Regular Season Title this past season, the Portugual native helped Adelphi rank third in the NE-10 with 2.12 goals per-game while also leading the league with a 0.45 goals-against average. De Oliveira also added two goals and two assists for six points on the season.
The leader of the defense, Penzini guided the unit to a the second best goals-against-average in the nation as only eight goals have been allowed through 17 games. The graduate student, who named to the Academic All-District team this season, was recorded three goals this season for all six of his points this year. Penzini's three goals included two game-winners with the most recent coming at Southern New Hampshire during a 1-0 victory in the 84th minute.
Coach Acquista is currently in his 10th year at the helm of the Panthers, leading the team to an NCAA Tournament berth last season in year three of returning to NCAA Division II. Earlier this year, Acquista recorded his 100th career win at Adelphi and now stands at 102 victories for the Garden City university and 120 for his overall career.
Joining De Oliveira and Penzini on the All-Conference First Team was
Emil Thomsen while
Caelan Hueber,
James Thristino,
Toni Soler and
Spenser Powell earned Second-Team consideration.
John Stojcevski was the lone Panther on the Third Team list.
Another key part of the defensive unit, Thomsen started all 17 games this past season. The senior helped to hold teams to just 8.1 shots per-game. Additionally, Thomsen added a goal from the back line during a 4-0 victory at his former school, New Haven.
Hueber enters play on Friday with the team-high in points at 24 behind a team-best 10 goals and four assists. The Ohio native has also put forth three game-winners including the overtime tally against Southern Connecticut State during the regular season. Hueber entered the top-10 of program career leaders with 35 goals this season while being one point shy of entering the points top-10 list.
Powell was honored with four NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week awards, the most by any individual. Starting in 16 games for the Panthers, the Massachussetts native currently ranks third in the nation with a 0.472 goals-against-average while adding a save percentage of 0.857 to rank second in the country. Powell enters the weekend with eight shutouts this season.
The most recent NE-10 Player of the Week, Soler registered seven points in the final two games of the season to enter the weekend with 11 points behind three goals and five assists. The midfielder put forth two goals in a 2-0 win at Saint Rose to end the season while also being the primary option on free kicks for the Panthers.
Trailing Hueber by just a point for the team-best, Thristino follows up his 2015 Rookie of the Year selection with Second Team accolades this season. The Port Jefferson native currently leads the conference with 4.06 shots per-game to help generate eight goals in addition to seven assists. The sophomore also owns three game-winners, including the winning strike against Franklin Pierce earlier this season.
Stojcevski has started in 16 games this season as part of the defense that did not allow a goal in seven straight games this season to help rank second in the country in goals-against-average. The senior, who is a two-time Academic All-District selection, has also been a main component of pushing the offense forward, resulting in an assist against Dominican.
Following Tuesday's NE-10 Championship Quarterfinal victory against Southern Connecticut, the Panthers welcome Franklin Pierce on Friday for a 7:00 pm NE-10 Championship Semfinal match.
