Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Adelphi Athletics

Women's Basketball Edged by Caldwell, 78-73

Caldwell, N.J. -- Hot shooting from the Caldwell University Cougars ended the four-game winning streak of the Adelphi University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers succumbed late to a 78-73 decision.

Adelphi (4-2) had a trio of players in double figures, led by Sierra Clark's 18 points and Simone Hobdy's double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for the Brown and Gold was Niajah Morgan, who dropped 13 points. Although the Panthers won the battle of the boards by a 20-rebound margin (50-30), the deep shooting from Caldwell (5-1) guards Antoinette Pilla and Kristen Drogsler proved to be a force, as they combined for 45 points and nine triples.

An 8-4 start by the Panthers was quickly erased by a 14-1 Cougar run that gave the home team an 18-9 lead as the first quarter reached its conclusion. Caldwell's largest lead of the game came in the final minutes, as the Cougars built a 27-15 edge with just about a minute to play in the first, before Hobdy hit a pair at the line to close out the first quarter with the Panthers down by 10, 27-17.

The second quarter was all Adelphi, as the Panthers erased the deficit with a 15-5 scoring advantage over the second 10 minutes, a period in which Morgan scored six points. With time expiring at the half and Adelphi holding its first lead since the early going, Drogsler knocked down a two to knot the game at 32-32.

Both teams came out of the locker room hot, as the two sides made the first five shots taken in the third quarter. It was at that point that Caldwell took back control, with Pilla and Drogsler combining to score nine straight points to turn a 40-40 tie into a 49-40 Cougar lead at the 4:56 mark. A 6-0 Adelphi run down the other end cut the game to one possession, but three more triples from the Cougars restored a 10-point margin with 2:04 to go in the quarter. Nonetheless, Clark scored Adelphi's final six points of the period to put the Panthers down six, 60-54, headed to the fourth.

While the Panthers continued to trail for much of the fourth, a late push and a Clark bucket tied the game at 64-64 with 6:03 remaining. With Adelphi later down three with a minute to play, Balfour swiped the ball away off the inbounds and went to the hoop for two to make it a one-point game, 74-73, and Adelphi looked to take the lead with possession with 20 seconds remaining. However, Clark was denied on the layup chance, and the Cougars made all four free throw opportunities they were given to ice the game.

The Brown and Gold return to action on Nov. 30, hosting the Lions of Molloy College in a 7 pm contest.

NOTES
- Hobdy has scored in double figures in five of her first six games in an Adelphi uniform, and set a new career high in rebounds.
