Women's Hoops Runs Streak to Four, Defeats New Haven, 67-51

West Haven, Conn. -- The Adelphi University women's basketball team earned its fourth straight victory on Tuesday night, as the Panthers shot nearly 50 percent from the field in a win over the Chargers of the University of New Haven on the road, 67-51.

Calli Balfour scored a game-high 20 points on 9-10 shooting for the Panthers (4-1, 3-0 NE-10) to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sierra Clark was also in double figures with 18 points, while Niajah Morgan and Sierra Schrader each scored eight. Natalie Fekula proved efficient off the bench with six points and three rebounds in 15 minutes played. Alexandria Kerr scored a team-high 15 for New Haven (1-4, 1-2 NE-10)

After trailing 5-2 early on, the Panthers scored eight unanswered points to wrestle the lead away from the Chargers in the first stanza. The Blue and Gold began to chip away at the lead, but Adelphi opened the second quarter on a 15-4 scoring run, in which Balfour scored seven, to hold a 27-15 lead at the 4:45 mark. The Chargers got three triples from Shannon Corridon and Micah Wormack in the ensuing minutes, the balanced Adelphi attack was enough to keep a 10-point lead at halftime, 36-26.

A 5-0 spurt to start the third quarter gave the Panthers their largest lead of the night to that point, but the Chargers chipped away, eventually cutting the lead to eight behind back-to-back triples at the 4:18 mark. On the next trip down the floor, however, Fekula converted on the layup late in the shot clock and drew the foul, converting on the free throw for the three-point play to restore the Brown and Gold's double-digit lead.

On the next play, Julia Gnieser swiped the ball away from Quana Smith and sprinted back to the hoop for two more, and Adelphi later ended the quarter remaining ahead by 11, 50-39. The Brown and Gold won the scoring battle in the fourth quarter as well, beginning the frame on a 7-0 run and ending it by a 17-12 margin to come away with the 67-51 final.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 27, when they travel to Caldwell University for a 1 pm contest.
