Garden City, N.Y. -- Four players in double figures helped pace the Adelphi University women's basketball team in a high-scoring 80-73 Northeast-10 Conference victory to open play inside the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon.
Sierra Clark scored a game-high 27 points on 10-18 shooting from the floor, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Sierra Schrader scored a career-high 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double of her own, while
Simone Hobdy also scored 13 and
Calli Balfour rounded out the quartet with 11. The Yellow Jackets (2-2, 1-1 NE-10) got two 20-point performances, with a team-high 22 from Jayda Gilmore and 20 from Dana Watts.
A high-scoring first quarter for the Panthers began as they took an 11-4 lead behind a 7-0 run that was kickstarted by a
Niajah Morgan three-pointer at the 7:40 mark. The lead grew to as high as 13 behind a layup and one from Clark, bringing the score to 23-10 at the 3:01 mark. Adelphi ended the first quarter leading in double figures, as Hobdy scored the last three points of the frame to make it an 11-point game, 26-15.
Adelphi continued to lead by double figures in the second quarter, and a
Natalie Fekula three-pointer brought the lead to a game-high 16, 38-22, with 4:19 until halftime. AIC got no closer than 10 for the duration of the half, and the Panthers continued to lead by double digits late in the third thanks to some deep shooting from
Julia Gnieser, Schrader and Fekula.Â
However, the Yellow Jackets pressed hard in the fourth, and a 7-0 run midway through the quarter saw them cut the lead to six at 70-64 with 4:38 remaining. On the ensuing trip down the floor, Schrader knocked down a three to halt the visitors' momentum, but Gilmore drove to the hoop for two to make it a five-point game, 75-70 with just over a minute on the clock. Nonetheless, the visitors got no closer from there, and Adelphi converted on free throw opportunities to seal the win.
The Panthers are back in action before Thanksgiving, as they travel to conference foe New Haven for a 5:30 pm contest on Nov. 22.
NOTES
- Schrader set a new career high in both points and three-pointers made, as she knocked down three in the game.
