Brookville, N.Y. - Three goals in the first half highlighted a 4-0 victory for the Adelphi University men's soccer team during the NCAA East Region Championship at LIU Post. With the victory, the Brown and Gold (19-1-1) advance to the NCAA National Quarterfinal Round on Saturday to face Charleston.
Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year
Federico De Oliveira scored the initial and eventual game-winning goal during the 13th minute. The midfielder collected at top of the box and shot into the lower right of the net to put the Panthers ahead. More than four minutes later,
Alejandro Penzini fired in the second strike of the day off a De Oliveira pass. The tally marked the senior back's fourth goal of the season while the goal and assist move De Oliveira to 15 points on the season.
Prior to the end of the first half,
Joseph Sanchez picked up his team-high 10th assist of the season. The midfielder crossed a ball to the center of the box that
Florent Girardin managed to lightly head over Jesper Malmstrom's reach to put the Brown and Gold ahead 3-0. The tally was part of an 11-4 shot advantage for the Panthers, in addition to a 6-1 corner kick margin.
Despite the three goals in the opening 45 minutes from Adelphi, Malmstrom still made five saves for the Pioneers (18-1-1). Meanwhile,
Spenser Powell was credited with two stops for the Panthers.
Looking to continue to pressure, Adelphi posted a 6-5 shot margin in the second half. The attack produced a 4-0 lead in the 84th minute, as De Oliveira recorded his second assist of the day. The midfielder served a ball in for
Jordan Daniel, in on reserve duty, finished for his first goal of the season.
In total, Adelphi created a shot margin of 17-9 in addition to nine corner kicks while yielding four. Powell ended his day with three stops to increase the single-season program shutout record to 14 games. Additionally, the team added another win to 19 on the year to also increase another program single-season record.
With a 2-1 victory prior to Adelphi's victory, Charleston advanced past Urbana to face the Panthers this Saturday. The National Quarterfinal match is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Pioneer Park on the campus of LIU Post.
Notes:
- Adelphi last played in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinal match in 1975, a 2-0 victory against Le Moyne.
- Today's victory against LIU Post was the first for Adelphi since a 1-0 win during the 1989 season.
