Brookville, N.Y. - After trailing 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Adelphi University men's soccer team scored two goals in the final stages of regulation to send the NCAA Division II Quarterfinal match to overtime. However, Charleston advances to the Semifinal Round behind a 5-3 result in penalty kicks following 20 minutes of scoreless overtime.
Looking for a final chance in the later stages of regulation,
Spenser Powell sent a ball up from the Panther (19-1-2) that landed to
Federico De Oliveira. The NE-10 Player of the Year collected the possession and tallied the first goal of the game for Adelphi with a 1v1 move to the lower right of the net and cutting the deficit to 2-1 during the 81st minute.
Two minutes later, a threat in the box from
James Thristino resulted in a foul on the Golden Eagles (18-2-2) to give Adelphi a penalty kick to tie the game.
Alejandro Penzini stepped up and converted the attempt to connect for his fifth goal of the season and even the score at 2-2.
Charleston reversed the field following the Penzini strike, forcing Powell to make a save in the 85th minute followed by De Oliveira making a stop on the line for a team save in the same minute.
Joseph Sanchez gave Adelphi a threat in the 87th minute to win the game, however, Paulo Pita made the stop to ensure overtime.
During the first overtime session, the Panthers had two opportunities in the 93rd minute that narrowly ended the contest. Thristino forced Pita to make a fingertip save that bounced off the left post followed by
Emil Thomsen sending a shot off the top of the crossbar. A minute later, Powell made a stop for Adelphi on Will Roberts to keep the game tied. In the final overtime, Thomsen forced Pita to make the lone save for either team in the session.
Pita made eight saves in total through 110 minutes while Powell made 10 stops, including seven in the second period to help keep the Panthers within striking distance. Following the second overtime, Adelphi held a slight 19-18 shot advantage as well as a lead of 6-4 in corner kicks.
During the penalty kick shootout, the Golden Eagles managed to make all five of their attempts while Pita made a stop on the first attempt he saw to give Charleston the 5-3 win during the best-of-five format. With the win, Charleston advances to the Semifinal Round in Kansas City for the third straight year.
The Golden Eagles created a 2-0 lead with two tallies in the first half. Jermaine Windster notched his 11th goal of the year with a strike from 20 yards out on the right side following a turnover. Exactly 10 minutes later in the 32nd minute, Windster found Felip Antonio from 14 yards out to push the lead to 2-0 before the Adelphi comeback.
The Panthers concluded the season with two program team records for wins (19) and shutouts (13).
