Women's Soccer Upends LIU Post 2-1 In NCAA Second Round

Garden City, N.Y. - For the second straight year, the Adelphi University women's soccer team will face Bridgeport in the NCAA Tournament East Region Championship following a 2-1 victory against LIU Post earlier this afternoon on Motamed Field. The Purple Knights advanced to the Third Round following a 3-2 decision against American International today in Bridgeport.

Two first half goals proved to be essential for the Panthers (16-3-1) in deciding the outcome. Jeanine Nunez recorded her 12th of the season during the 22nd minute, finishing off a pass from Morgan Santoro inside the box and two yards from the net.

Santoro and Nunez both accounted for assists on the second tally 11 minutes later. The team's leading scorers combined to find Laura Gomez on the left side of the net, finishing a strike from three yards out to beat Hillevi Eklow.

Despite the 2-0 lead at halftime, the Panthers only held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots while neither team created a corner kick. Meanwhile, both Eklow and Anne Marie Ulliac were forced to make one save each.

Eklow added four more saves in the second period to keep the Pioneers (15-4-2) within striking distance throughout the final 45 minutes. The defensive effort eventually created a threat on the offensive end that Andrea Huntzinger was able to finish. Alice Schonfeldt lofted a pass over the Adelphi defense, allowing Huntzinger to chip a shot in to the right side of the net and cutting the Panther lead to 2-1 with 18 minutes remaining.

Following the LIU Post goal, the Brown and Gold out shot the visitors 5-1 from the 74th minute on that forced Eklow to make two of her stops in the half. The attack from Adelphi resulted in the first corner kick of the game coming in the 82nd minute while also allowing the Panthers to control the game until the final horn to prevail 2-1 and advance in the tournament.

The Panthers advance to face Bridgeport in the Third Round for the second straight year. This season's matchup will be played at West Chester, the highest remaining seed in the Atlantic Region. Date and time of the matches, including West Chester against Kutztown, have yet to be announced.

Notes:
- Both of the top two seeds in the East and Atlantic face off for the Regional Championships in the Third Round. The two regional winners are scheduled to match up in the Fourth Round of the tournament, with a trip to the National Semifinal on the line.
- Santoro increased her program record single-season points mark to 54 with two assists today.
- Bridgeport upended Adelphi 2-1 in the Third Round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. However, Adelphi knocked off the Purple Knights 1-0 earlier this season.
