West Chester, Pa. - The 24th goal on the season for
Morgan Santoro in the 86th minute was not enough for the Adelphi University women's soccer team this afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision to Bridgeport in the NCAA Third Round and East Region Championship on the campus of West Chester University.
Trailing 2-0 following a goal in each half for the Purple Knights (18-3), Santoro was able to cut the deficit in half for the Panthers (16-4-1) in the late stages of this afternoon's game. With 4:27 left in regulation, the D2CCA East Region Player of the Year connected on a free kick to get Adelphi on the board and rewrite the program's single-season goal mark. However, the Bridgeport defense did not allow another shot attempt for the Brown and Gold and held on for a 2-1 decision to advance to Sunday's National Quarterfinal match against West Chester.
Following 31 minutes of scoreless action, Bridgeport got on the board during the 32nd minute to go up 1-0 as Shannon Colligan finished a Hanne Neby pass. The advantage increased to 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half as Flo Gamby notched her seventh tally on the season while Nicole Worthington picked up the assist.
The Purple Knight finished the afternoon with a 12-9 shot margin in addition to three corner kicks while yielding just one.
Anne Marie Ulliac totaled four saves in the effort for the Panthers.
The Brown and Gold have recorded at least 14 wins for the fourth straight season, with the last two coming under Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa. The streak matches the 2001-04 seasons under Rich Ilsley.
Notes:
- The goal in the 86th minute for Santoro broke the standard set by Kimberly Campbell in 2000.
- The senior midfielder increased her single-season points record to 56.
