Garden City, N.Y. - The 14th ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Northeast-10 Conference play following tonight's 6-1 win against visiting Stonehill on Motamed Field that included four first half goals.
The Panthers (8-1-1/6-0-1 NE-10) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage as
James Thristino notched his fifth goal of the season during the seventh minute of action. The sophomore struck with a left foot into the top left corner after a pass and a header from
Toni Soler and
Caelan Hueber set up the play in front of the net. The Skyhawks (4-6/2-4 NE-10) were quick to respond as Patrick Doherty finished a Connor O'Brien pass during the 15th minute to even the game at 1-1.
Following nine minutes of scoreless action, Adelphi was able to jump ahead with Soler assisting on the go-ahead goal from
Federico De Oliveira. Soler drove a free kick into the box that De Oliveira was able to finish with a header. The lead increased to 3-0 as Hueber rebounded an initial shot from Thristino in the 28th minute before
Joseph Sanchez notched his first goal of the season pushed the margin to 4-1 two minutes later.
The 4-1 halftime advantage for Adelphi was aided by an 11-2 shot margin as well as creating three corner kicks.
Spenser Powell stopped one shot during the opening half while his counterpart Conor McDonough also stopped one attempt.
Continuing to press the attack, Hueber tallied the fifth goal of the game with his second of the evening and eighth of the season. The Ohio native tipped in the initial header attempt which was saved by McDonough. The scoring parade was concluded during the 79th minute as
Christian Lird put forth a free kick into the top left corner.
The Panthers ended the match with a 21-4 shot advantage as well as a lead in corner kicks 6-3. McDonough ended his evening with five saves while Powell and
Joseph Blasetti split time in net for the Brown and Gold in the final half and were not forced to make a stop.
Adelphi returns to the field this Tuesday, hosting Franklin Pierce for a league contest scheduled to start at 4:30 pm on Motamed Field.
Notes:
- Despite registering his first goal of the season, Sanchez currently leads the NE-10 with seven assists.
- Hueber moves into a tie for second among the league leaders with eight goals.
