Garden City, N.Y. - A late fury from Franklin Pierce was held off by the Adelphi University men's soccer team as the hosts were able to protect Motamed Field with a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory earlier tonight.
The Panthers (9-1-1/7-0-1 NE-10) jumped on the board early in the first half as
Federico De Oliveira created a penalty in the box during the eighth minute.
Alejandro Penzini converted the ensuing penalty kick, his second goal of the season.
The Brown and Gold controlled the play for the majority of the first half, however, only held a slight 6-5 shot advantage. Meanwhile, the Ravens (7-3/5-3 NE-10) created three corner kicks compared to two from Adelphi. Additionally, both
Spenser Powell and Jadel Poon-Lewis made three saves for their respective teams.
Keeping the attack moving forward, the Panthers were able to create six corner kicks in the second half while not yielding one to the Ravens. The attack resulted in a much needed second goal in the 70th minute.
Toni Soler delivered a cross from the left flank after creating space that
Caelan Hueber gathered beyond the far post and touched back into the middle of the box where
James Thristino was able to deliver his sixth goal of the season and put Adelphi ahead 2-0.
Following the Panther goal, Franklin Pierce reversed the field during teh 77th minute. Charlie Madden created a loose ball in the Adelphi end with a shot that knocked off the cross bar and eventually came to the foot Noam Kolakofsky. Kolakofsky collected the loose ball and struck the back of the net to cut the Brown and Gold lead to 2-1.
The goal was the final attempt allowed by the Adelphi defense as the Ravens were unable to find the equalizer in the final 13 minutes of regulation. Thristino nearly registered his second of the evening, however, his attempt flew high above the crossbar during the 89th minute.
The Panthers ended the evening with a 12-8 shot advantage in addition to a margin of 8-3 in corner kicks. Nearly goalie made a save in the final 45 minutes, finishing the match with three each.
Looking ahead, Adelphi travels to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday for a 7:00 pm NE-10 contest in Manchester.
