Garden City, N.Y. - A goal in the 89th minute allowed Southern Connecticut to force a 1-1 double overtime draw against the 12th ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team earlier this evening during Northeast-10 Conference play.
After not attempting a shot in the first half, the Panthers (8-1-1/5-1-1 NE-10) struck first during the 66th minute as
Morgan Santoro scored her league leading 13th goal of the season. The senior found space directly in front of the net inside the 18-yard box after a through ball from
Victoria Antonino trickled to her feet. Santoro powered a shot off the finger tips of Gabrielle Arruda and off the crossbar into the back of the net.
Despite an 11-3 shot differential in favor of Adelphi in the second half, Southern Connecticut (4-5-2/3-3-1 NE-10) managed to find a last chance opportunity with a corner kick in the 89th minute, the lone corner kick of the off for the Owls. Meaghan Howard directed the kick to the far post where Caroline Staudle headed in the game-tying goal.
In the overtime period,
Jeanine Nunez was afforded the best opportunity for either side after a pass from Santoro led the junior to the net. However, Nunez shot underneath the ball and sent the attempt over the net. The attempt was one of three in the first session for the Brown and Gold while Southern Connecticut put on two shots. Neither team was able to create a shot in the final overtime period.
The Owls created a 6-0 advantage in shots during the opening half, however, only one forced
Anne Marie Ulliac to make a save, her lone save of the contest during the 10th minute of play. The Panthers changed the momentum in the second half and ended the contest with a 7-2 corner kick margin as well as an advantage in shots, 14-11.
Adelphi returns to Motamed Field on Saturday to host Le Moyne at 3:00 pm as the program will celebrate "Senior Day" with a pregame ceremony.
Notes:
- Santoro extended her scoring streak to nine straight games and has recorded at least two points in every games this season.
- The senior entered the week ranked fourth in the country in points.
- Tonight marked the first overtime game of the season for the Panthers, and the first since last season's 2-1 double overtime victory against Merrimack in the NE-10 Championship Semifinal.
