Manchester, N.H. -- The Adelphi University field hockey team turned a 1-0 halftime deficit around thanks to goals from
Emily Power and
Elizabeth Mercuri to win 2-1 in the final game of the Northeast-10 Conference regular season on Saturday afternoon.
After 20 minutes of scoreless action in which each team's goalkeeper was required to make just one stop, the Panthers (13-5, 9-3 NE-10) fell behind 1-0 when Laura van der Doorn scored off Amaris Taylor's penalty corner for the home team. Adelphi was unable to get a shot off for the duration of the half, and
Amanda Gargiulo made another save on the Penmen (9-9, 5-7 NE-10) in the final three minutes to keep the deficit at just one goal.
To begin the second half, the Brown and Gold got going on offense, with a
Jamie Ahrens shot saved by Melanie Rennie just 1:18 into the second frame. The Panthers eventually found the equalizer at the 42:43 mark, as Power took
Lena Pollich's centering pass from the right side for the one-touch goal to make it 1-1. Just over four minutes later, Pollich has a hand in the game-winner, as her initial shot was blocked but put in by Mercuri for the 2-1 Adelphi lead.
That was all the offense the Panthers needed to come away with the win, as Gargiulo made two stops against SNHU's Maddie Holt in the later minutes to preserve the win.
The Brown and Gold clinched a spot in the NE-10 Championship field and will await their seeding based on the results of today's play. The NE-10 field hockey championship begins on Tuesday.
