Garden City, N.Y. -- A first-half goal from Merrimack's Rylie Hammond and nine saves from Katharina Ohmen combined to upend the Adelphi University field hockey team in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Motamed Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The fifth-seeded Warriors, who also defeated the Panthers 3-2 on Motamed Field in Adelphi's final regular season home game, advance to the semifinal round on Friday afternoon, where they'll face the top-seeded Hawks of Saint Anselm College. One goal was all that Adelphi (13-6) keeper
Amanda Gargiulo allowed, as she made a career-high 12 saves in the setback.Â
Both teams pressed on offense early, as Ohmen set the tone by making three stops on the Adelphi offense in the first 7:45, while Gargiulo also made three stops by the 15-minute mark. Ohmen made two more saves in the ensuing minutes before her offense broke through, as Hammand took Mary McNeil's pass from the top of the circle for the goal straight on for the 1-0 lead at the 21:40 mark. The Warrior offense controlled the ensuing minutes but another stop from Gargiulo and a defensive save by
Rachel Colvin combined to keep it a one-goal game.
The Warriors took control of the offensive momentum to begin the second half, taking seven shots over the first five-plus minutes only to see Gargiulo turn them all away. Adelphi took its first shot of the second period in the 43rd minute, but all eight of the Brown and Gold's second-half shots were saved by Ohmen or missed the mark wide.
