Manchester, N.H. - Concluding the regular season on the road this afternoon, the sixth ranked Adelphi University women's soccer was unable to overcome two goals in the second half at Southern New Hampshire as the host went on to a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory. The lone goal of the game for the Brown and Gold (14-2-1/11-2-1 NE-10) came from
Morgan Santoro as the senior rewrote the single-season program points record at 50.
The Penmen (10-7-1/7-6-1 NE-10) struck for the match's opening tally right before the halftime break. Sydeny Crema recorded her third goal of the season off a rebound shot, with the intial shot and assist going to Trisha Luis.
Despite trailing at the half, Adelphi controlled a 10-5 shot margin while also producing three corner kicks. Autumn Scanlon made two stop for SNHU in the opening half to keep the Panthers off the board while
Delaney Dayoan registered three saves for the Brown and Gold.
Looking to find the equalizer, a foul on Jeanine Nunex outside of the Penmen 18-yard box set up an opportunity for Santoro to tie the game. With the chance, the Islip native fired a free kick to the bottom portion of the crossbar that directed off the back of Scanlon and into the net, tying the game at 1-1. In the process, Santoro established the new single-season program record with points behind her 22nd goal of the season.
Eight minutes following Santoro's tying tally in the 61st minute, a through ball from Courtney Benson left a wide open net for Miranda Peloquin to notch her third strike of the year and give Southern New Hampshire the lead again. Peloquin later assisted on the insurance goal, sending a chip pass from the left side of the box to the right for Shae Roys to connect on in the 87th minute and give the home team a 3-1 margin.
Both teams look forward to the NE-10 Championship this week, set to begin on Tuesday with quarterfinal round action. Match ups have yet to be announced by the NE-10.
Notes:
- Santoro trails Kimberly Campbell's single-seaosn mark of 23 goals in 2000 by one tally.
- Despite the setback, Adelphi controlled the first place position of the NE-10 Standings following today's results.
