Garden City, N.Y. - The sixth ranked Adelphi University women's soccer closed out the home portion of the 2016 regular schedule with a second half rally that produced a 3-2 victory against visiting Assumption during Northeast-10 Conference play.
Trailing 2-1 after the first half, the Panthers (14-1-1/11-1-1 NE-10) quickly tied the game at 2-2 less than four minutes into the second period.
Victoria Antonino put in the equalizer off a ball punched out from Greyhound (8-8-1/6-6-1 NE-10) goalkeeper Alexis Nason during a corner kick from
Morgan Santoro. Antonino collected the ball at the top of the box and struck a right foot to even the score.
After nearly 30 minutes of a 2-2 match,
Jeanine Nunez put in her second goal of the game to give the Brown and Gold the lead at 3-2.
Erica Bleimeyer sent in a ball from the right flank that placed perfectly at the feet of Nunez for a one touch goal into the bottom right of the net during the 76th minute. Three minutes earlier,
Delaney Dayoan made one of her two saves on the night with a diving stop out of the net on Kallie Villemaire to preserve the tie.
Assumption intially created a 2-0 lead within the first nine minutes on two goals from Amanda Arnold. The junior first snuck in a misplayed ball from Dayoan in the seventh minute followed by a rebound shot from the crossbar in the ninth minute. Jaclyn Tomasello picked up the assist on the play to help give the Greyhounds an early advantage.
Looking to create an opportunity, a foul inside the Adelphi box helped create a corner kick to get on the board. Nunez finished off the penalty kick in the 39th minute to cut the lead entering the halftime break.
The Panthers finished the evening with a 13-10 advantage in shots, allowing five to Assumption in each half. The Greyhounds created a 3-1 corner kick margin in the first half, however, the Brown and Gold did not yield an attempt to Assumption in the second half and finished the game with a 5-3 lead in the category. Alexis Nason stopped four shots in the effort for the visitors while Dayoan picked up her first career win behind two stops.
Looking ahead, Adelphi concludes the regular season with a trip to Manchester, N.H. to face Southern New Hampshire on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
