Acquista Notches 100th Win As #9 Men's Soccer Upends AIC In OT, 2-1

Springfield, Mass. - A last second goal from James Thristino helped lift the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at American International College this evening during Northeast-10 Conference play. In the process, Head Coach Carlo Acquista notched his 100th career victory at the helm of the Brown and Gold (13-1-1/11-0-1 NE-10).

Acquista becomes the third Panther coach to reach the 100-win milestone as Mel Less won 117 games (1967-77) while Bob Montgomery recorded 258 victories (1978-2007).

"I want to give a ton of credit to American International; it's always very difficult to go on the road and get a result," said Acquista. "They are a well coached and talented team with many individual players. I also want to thank this year's team, my present and past staff, and all of the alumni the past 10 years for the work they have put into this program to make this a very special night. They all have made it extremely memorable."

The game-winner came off the foot of Thristino with just five seconds remaining in the second overtime. Toni Soler, who scored the game's opening goal, sent a ball in from the left side that the sophomore forward was able to put into the upper right of the net and keep Adelphi unbeaten in conference play.

Soler gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead during the eighth minute of play, placing a free kick from outside the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the goal. The Brown and Gold held the lead for nearly 80 minutes before the Yellow Jackets (7-8-1/5-6-1 NE-10) were able to even the score at 1-1.

In the 87th minute, Jason Burnusuz was in the right place at the right time to direct a rebound in to tie the game. Burnusuz collected a blocked shot and drove in the equalizer into the bottom right corner.

The Panthers controlled a 3-1 shot advantage in the first overtime before Thristino found the game-winner in the final moments of the second overtime. The visitors finished with a 19-15 shot advantage while also controlling a 9-7 margin in corner kicks. Joseph Blasetti made five stops for his first career victory for the Panthers.

Adelphi concludes the regular season on Friday with a trip to Albany to face Saint Rose at 7:00 pm.

Notes:
-
Acquista matches last season's win total of 13 as the Panthers have recorded 13 wins three times now under the St. John's graduate.
- The Panthers move to 34 points in first place of the Northeast-10 Conference standings, seven points ahead of second place Merrimack as both teams have one game remaining.
