#8 Field Hockey Holds Off Assumption, 3-2

Worchester, Mass. -- A 3-0 lead for the Adelphi University field hockey team stood up late, as the Panthers recorded a big Northeast-10 Conference victory on the road at Assumption College on Tuesday night, 3-2.

Adelphi (12-5, 8-3 NE-10) got first-half goals from Elissa Frein and Elizabeth Mercuri, while Lena Pollich scored the first goal of the second half off Frein's assist before Assumption (9-7, 6-5 NE-10) got on the board. A 14-11 edge in shots and a 9-6 margin in penalty corners both favored Assumption, but the Greyhound offense was stopped in part by Amanda Gargiulo in the Adelphi net, who made seven saves.

Adelphi was awarded the first two penalty corners of the contest, with Frein breaking through for the first goal of the game at the 8:32 mark. The freshman took a shot from the top of the circle that was put into the lower corner of the cage past Sarah Bodzinski for her team-leading 11th score of the season. That mark stood for much of the first half, until Mercuri corralled a loose ball and made a move around the keeper for her 10th goal of the season, making the score 2-0 with nine minutes to play in the opener.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Adelphi offense went to work again, as a Frein shot was blocked after a penalty corner, but her second shot in a short span was tipped into the goal by Pollich for the 3-0 Brown and Gold lead. At that point, Assumption began to find some momentum, as the home team held a 10-4 edge in shots in the second half, with Allison Sheahan scoring after a pair of saves from Gargiulo to break up the shutout with 44:13 gone by.

Another penalty corner for the Greyhounds led to Kristin McCarthy scoring off a Sam Tepper feed with just over 12 minutes to go, but despite the home team's best efforts, Assumption was unable to tie. In the final 10 minutes, Assumption had three chances off penalty corners, but two saves were made by Gargiulo for the win.

Adelphi is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire to close out the regular season at 1 pm.
