Volleyball Soars Past The Skyhawks, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team stormed past visiting Stonehill College, 3-0 (25-17. 25-18, 25-18), thanks to an offense that nearly doubled up the Skyhawks (8-11, 3-5 NE-10) in kills, 41-21 on Saturday, October 22 in Northesat-10 action.

The attacking effort was led by Mandy Stanislovaitis who had a game-high 13 kills, while Melissa Rigo and Madison Canestrari chipped in nine and seven kills. The defense was paced by Sierra Crook and Rigo, who were the only members of the Brown and Gold to post double figure dig totals with 14 and 12. Megan Manierski was tops among all players in set assists with 28.

With the scored tied at four in the first set, Adelphi (14-8, 5-3 NE-10) used a 5-0 run to take control, 9-4, capping that effort with a Rigo slam. Stonehill got as close as three points on a kill from Allyson Hughes, 18-15, but Stanislovaitis sparked the Panthers to a set-ending, 7-2 run, giving the Brown and Gold a 1-0 match lead.

Adelphi used another 5-0 run in the second set, which started at the exact same spot as the first, 4-4 to grab momentum, 9-4. However, this run was started by a Skyhawk service error and capped by a Stonehill attack miscue. The visitors trailed by seven, but rallied to get as close as three, 20-17, before another Adelphi spurt put Stonehill on the ropes, 24-17 and then a Rigo kill ended the action, 25-18.

In the third and final set of the match, the Brown and Gold jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back, building their advantage to nine points, 24-15, before closing the door on the visitors and the match, 25-18 with a Manierski finish.

The Panthers return to the court and put their current five game win streak on the line on Tuesday, October 25 when they welcome the University of New Haven to the Center for Recreation and Sports at 7:00 pm.
