Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Chargers of the University of New Haven on Tuesday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sport, 3-0.
Melissa Rigo tallied a double-double for Adelphi (12-9, 5-4 NE-10) in the setback, with 14 kills and 11 digs, while
Mandy Stanislovaitis added nine kills and 15 digs.
Megan Manierski dished out 27 set assists, while the defense got 18 digs from
Sierra Crook in the back row and seven block assists from
Madison Canestrari in the front row.
The early going of the first set was a back and forth affair, with neither side gaining a strong foothold until the Chargers (12-6, 7-1 NE-10) took a 14-11 lead on back-to-back kills from Caroline Martins. From that point, Adelphi ran off four straight points to edge ahead, but the Chargers rebounded with seven of the next 10 to lead 21-18 and closed out the set with four straight to pocket the opener, 25-19.Â
Adelphi started set two on a 7-0 run, but the Chargers continued to claw their way back to 14-13, at which point the Panthers used their first timeout of the set. The action remained close after that point, After a Rigo hammer got the Panthers to three set points at 24-21, three kills and an ace brought New Haven to set point, and after a Stanislovaitis effort saved one, two more Charger kills secured the second set, 27-25.
An 8-5 Panther lead in the third quickly turned around, as New Haven scored 10 of the next 14 points to turn the frame around, 15-12. From that point, the Chargers' roll continued, with their lead expanding to 20-13. A late Adelphi push brought the set to within four twice, before falling by a 25-19 final.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, Oct. 27 when they travel to nearby NYIT for a 7 pm match.
