Garden City, N.Y. - Two first half goals helped propel the ninth ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory against Saint Anselm in the final regular season home game of the 2016 campaign.
Prior to the game, the Panthers (12-1-1/10-0-1 NE-10) honored the senior class of
Brian Morgan,
Spenser Powell,
Jordan Daniel,
Emil Thomsen,
Christian Lird, Kenneth Indergaard,
Alejandro Penzini,
TJ Butler,
John Stojcevski and
Caelan Hueber.
The first stages of the opening half played out to both teams controlling possesion before the first shot from Hueber came during the seventh minute after each team produced a corner kick. The next shot for Adelphi came in the 25th minute, resulting in the first goal of the contest.
Federico De Oliveira and Hueber played a give-and-go game that resulted in the junior midfielder finishing in the bottom left of the net off the pass from the senior forward.
Hueber came on the scoring end of the next goal opportunity, finish a pass from
Joseph Sanchez with a left foot after Sanchez fed a well placed ball in the middle of the 18-yard box. With the goal, Hueber moves into a tie for 10th in program history with 35 career goals.
The Brown and Gold outshot the Hawks (3-11-1/2-9-1) 7-2 in the first half before not allowing a shot opportunity in the second half. Adelphi ended the match with a 15-2 shot advantage, forcing Helio Meirelles Neto to make six saves for Saint Anselm. Meanwhile, the trio of Powell, Morgan and
Joseph Blasetti did not have to make a save to preserve the shutout for the Panthers, who also held a 6-1 corner kick lead.
Looking ahead, the Panthers play the first of two straight road games to the season on Tuesday with a trip to American International. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start in Springfield.

- Hueber ties both Ron Atanasio ('77) and Anthony Prescott ('79) for 10th in program history with 35 goals.
- The Panthers owned the second slot in the first release of the NCAA East Region Rankings, which were released on Wednesday.
