Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University field hockey team saw its four-game winning streak snapped by the visiting Merrimack College Warriors on Motamed Field on Saturday afternoon by a 3-2 final score.
Prior to the start of the game, the Panthers (11-5, 7-3 NE-10) honored the four seniors on the roster:
Natalina Sagliocca,
Lena Pollich,
Rachel Colvin and
Tina Brindisi playing in their final regular season home game.
Just 35 seconds in the contest, Pollich kicked off her last regular season home game in style, taking an unassisted goal to the cage for the 1-0 Adelphi lead. That advantage stood for nearly the duration of the first half, until Merrimack's (6-7, 6-4 NE-10) Taylor Simpson cleaned up a rebound past
Amanda Gargiulo in the Adelphi net with just 1:28 on the clock until halftime to tie the game at 1-1.
In rainy and windy conditions that grew steadier as the game progressed, it was the visiting Warriors who broke out to a stronger start in the second half, as Simpson scored again courtesy of a crossed shot past Gargiulo that found a home in the bottom left side of the cage to give the visiting team a 2-1 lead. With momentum firmly on their side, the Warriors ran their streak to three straight goals as Nicole Bradley scored on a penalty stroke opportunity with 45:23 gone by to open up a 3-1 lead.
Adelphi began a comeback attempt with just under five minutes remaining, as
Jamie Ahrens scored up high past Warrior keeper Katharina Ohmen off a Pollich corner to shave the deficit to 3-2. Looking for the equalizer, an
Elizabeth Mercuri shot was stopped by Ohmen with 1:27 remaining, before Adelphi was awarded a penalty corner with just 24 seconds left. The Panther attack forced Ohmen to vacate, but
Emily Power's goal attempt was cleared out by Elizabeth Egan for the defensive save. As time expired, Adelphi was given another corner, but Ohmen again stepped up and saved
Elissa Frein's game-tying attempt to end the contest.Â
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Assumption College for a pivotal NE-10 contest at 7 pm.
