Waltham, Mass. -- With just 33 seconds left in regulation, senior forward
Lena Pollich scored her third game-winning goal of the season to lead the Adelphi University field hockey team past the Bentley University Falcons, 2-1, on the road on Wednesday night.
The eighth-ranked Panthers (11-4, 7-2 NE-10) won their fourth straight game as they rallied from a 1-0 second half deficit to defeat the Falcons (6-9, 4-5 NE-10) thanks to a game-tying goal from
Samantha Nizich and Pollich's game-winner.
Amanda Gargiulo made eight stops in the Panther net in the win, including five in the second half, while the Brown and Gold held an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.
A scoreless first half saw the two teams take a combined seven shots, as Gargiulo stopped three of the Falcons' four efforts. The Panthers held a 5-1 edge in penalty corners in the first half, but were unable to score on any of these opportunities, with Gargiulo's counterpart Jana Mones making two stops.Â
Over the first four minutes of the second half, Mones made a total of four saves on three shots from Pollich and another from
Elizabeth Mercuri, and the Falcons responded down the other end just over four minutes later. The home squad took a 1-0 thanks to Rachel Crowley, who took a Christa Knell cross into the box and fired a shot at the far post from five yards out for the goal.
The Brown and Gold were off the board for another 15 minutes until the offense finally broke through, as Nizich took an
Elissa Frein pass off the corner into the far post and in to tie the game at 1-1. From the 61:35 mark, Gargiulo made two more stops for the Panthers, and in the final minute, Pollich fired a long shot from the top of the arc for the game-winning goal.Â
The Panthers are back in action at home on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they host Merrimack in a 12 pm NE-10 contest. Prior to the game, the team will honor their four seniors: Pollich,
Rachel Colvin,
Tina Brindisi and
