New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled up Interstate 95 on October 18, to clash with Southern Connecticut State University (13-10, 3-4 NE-10) and shook off some early rust to rally past the Owls, 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-13).
Melissa Rigo (18) and
Mandy Stanislovaitis (12) continue to pace the Brown and Gold (12-8, 3-3 NE-10) attack and combined for 30 kills, while
Katie Barry sparked the offense with a career-high 30 set assists.
Sierra Crook was tops defensively for Adelphi with 21 digs and teammates Barry and Rigo chipped in 16 and 14.
The turning point of the first set came early, when an Adelphi service error broke a 7-7 tie and sent the Owls on a 6-0 spurt that gave control to the hosts, 13-7. Adelphi got as close as four points on one occassion, but could get no closer, falling 25-19.
It was more of the same early in set two, with Southern Connecticut stalking out to a 17-7 lead. However, Barry was inserted into the line-up and sparked the Brown and Gold on a furious 13-3 sprint that tied the game at 22 on a Stanislovaitis kill. The Owls' Faith Ford put a ball away to put them back on top, 23-22, but Adelphi ripped off three straight points to steal the set from Southern Connecticut, 25-23.
The Panthers moved the momentum into set three, opening the action with a 7-0 run, capped by another Stanislovaitis effort. The Owls responded by chipping away at the Adelphi lead, pulling to within two points on three occassions, including at 17-15 thanks to an Alexandria Jurgens kill. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Brown and Gold answered the bell, closing out the set with a 8-3 run, including four combined kills from Rigo and Stanislovaitis, to collect a 25-18 victory.
The fourth and final set was all Adelphi, and thanks to a game-opening 13-2 run the Panthers never looked back, securing the set and match, 25-13.
The Brown and Gold return to the comfort of the Center for Recreation and Sports on Friday, October 21, kicking off a three game homestand against Bentley University at 7:00 pm.
