Rindge, N.H. - Four second half goals pushed the 12th ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory at Franklin Pierce earlier this afternoon during Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Brown and Gold (11-1-1/8-1-1 NE-10) jumped to an early advantage during the sixth minute as
Jeanine Nunez scored a goal for the second straight game. The Staten Island native volleyed a ball in off a service from
Taylor Sipos to create a 1-0 lead. However, in less than a minute, the host Ravens (5-5-2/3-5-2 NE-10) tied the game at 1-1 as Sophie Cousineau registered her fifth goal of the season off a cross from Nathalia da Silva.
The two tallies marked the lone goals of the season to end the first half tied at 1-1. Adelphi held advantages in both shots, 10-3, and corner kicks, 2-0, while each goalie,
Anne Marie Ulliac and Casey Cook, made one save each.
Less than six minutes into the second period, the Panthers notched the game-winner and the first of the four goals in the half. After picking up the assists on the game's opening goal, Sipos put forth the game-winner on a rebound shot from
Victoria Antonino. In another matter of minutes, the margin extended to two goals as Nunez scored her second of the game with an easy finish from a
Laura Gomez skipped cross.
Adelphi continued to add to the advantage during the 59th minute as
Morgan Santoro scored her league leading 16th goal of the season off an assist from
Michelle Wienecke. The senior added to the lead and goal tally during the 74th minute as the midfielder put a cross from Sipos off the chest inside the left post.
The Panthers ended the match with a 19-5 shot advantage while also creating a margin of 2-1 in corner kicks.
Looking ahead, the Brown and Gold begin a streak of three straight home games on Tuesday by hosting Pace on Motamed Field for a 7:00 pm start.
Notes:
- Santoro now leads the conference with 40 points while Nunez is second behind 23 points.
- The 40 points for Santoro now places her 10th all-time in single season program records, replacing Shannon Sepe ('93) while the 17 goals ties Santoro with Sepe for seventh on the single season chart.
- Adelphi moves into first place in the NE-10 standings with the victory, leading American International by one point for first place.
